Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Undertake training and development as required by the apprenticeship standard to perform the duties and responsibilities list below.
  • Assist the Insurance Officer with the maintenance and development of the Council’s insurance portfolio to ensure that it offers the Council appropriate and cost-effective financial protection against insurable losses and liabilities.
  • Support and assist the Insurance Officer in delivering an efficient and effective insurance claims handling service.
  • When required deputise for the Insurance Officer in relation to the provision of insurance advice and support.
  • Support the Council, Directorates and Schools by assisting in the development and delivery of an efficient and effective insurance claims handling service and viable claims defensibility measures.
  • Support the Insurance Officer in liaising with departments, third party claimants, insurers and solicitors regarding the collation and processing of claims information.
  • Assist in carrying out the necessary accounting procedures to ensure the timely and accurate recharging of insurance and claims costs across all departments and schools.
  • Assist in advising departments and schools regarding the preparation of budget
    information relative to insurance and claims costs.
  • Participate in training to directorates, schools and Councillors that will improve their understanding of claims processing and assist them in controlling claims costs.
  • Support the Insurance Officer and Principal Insurance Officer in delivering team objectives in an efficient, effective and timely manner.
  • Attend meetings when required and assist in running reports for trends analysis quarterly reports.
  • Assist the Principal Insurance Officer in the insurance tender and renewal process.
  • Ensure claims are accurately updated to the claims management system and that all filing is kept up to date.
  • Assist with processing payments in a timely manner.
  • Assist where necessary in providing Insurance and claims management advice and guidance in a professional and confident manner.
  • Advise on insurance and claims management in accordance with best practice and work to the relevant professional standards of the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters.
  • Establish and maintain effective working arrangements and communication strategies with all Council directorates and schools requiring advice and support on risk management and loss control matters.
  • Communicate with both internal and external stakeholders in a professional and timely manner.
  • Work in a professional open supportive and courteous manner, assisting to provide a centre of excellence for all insurance and insurance claims matters.
  • Have an effective performance management approach with the key objectives of reducing the Council’s cost of claims and protecting its reputation and finances.
  • Apply the Council’s equality and diversity values when dealing with all people inside and outside the Council.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grading of the post.
