Summary

Supervising class activities. Assisting with young people’s learning experience. Helping students who might need extra support. Learning classroom-based skills and behaviour techniques. Planning sessions and thinking about learning objectives. Working alongside the teacher to support classroom activities.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Provide individual or small group support to pupils, helping them to achieve their learning targets.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, promoting engagement and motivation in learning activities.
  • Assist in the personal, social, and emotional development of children, offering pastoral support where needed.
  • Help to manage behaviour in the classroom, using positive reinforcement techniques and ensuring a safe, respectful environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to prepare lesson materials and resources.
  • Assist with lesson delivery, ensuring that students understand and follow instructions.
  • Provide feedback to teachers on student progress and any observed learning needs.
  • Supervise students during break times, on school trips, or in other activities as required.
  • Deliver interventions and tailored learning support for pupils with additional learning needs, including SEN (Special Educational Needs).
  • Assist with literacy, numeracy, or other targeted curriculum areas under the teacher’s guidance.
  • Use technology and resources effectively to support learning.
  • Help maintain a tidy, organised classroom environment.
  • Contribute to record-keeping, including attendance, assessments, and observations.
