Summary

We are looking for an individual who is keen to provide support to the business and finance team. The ideal candidate will be well organised, proactive and have a keen interest in finance and learning. Depending on prior experience and skills level, we will fund either a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship which will result in an AAT qualification.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Primary purpose of the role:

Our small and experienced finance team will train and mentor the apprentice in all the basic duties of the finance team. Once trained, this apprentice role will then be able to take responsibility for managing the sales ledger (customer invoicing and receipts) and purchase ledger (supplier payments) as part of The Grange Centre Finance Team.

Professional duties:

  • Sales Ledger Management: ensuring the correct and timely billing of individuals and funding bodies.
  • Managing the receipt of funds, and posting to the accounting system (Sage).
  • Credit control and dealing with queries: monitor outstanding balances, follow up on overdue payments, maintain effective credit control procedures.
  • The Apprentice will also receive training and, in due course, may take on responsibility for some of the purchase ledger operations: ensuring supplier invoices and staff/volunteer expense claims are paid on time, with proper approval, and accurately entered on the accounting system (Sage).
  • Backup Support: provide support for other Finance functions: cash, banking and payroll as needed.

Team and organisational working:

  • Assisting with other finance functions and general office administration and assisting other members of the team as requested by the Finance Team Leader.
  • Attending staff and project meetings as a representative of the Finance Team, ensuring good collaboration and communication with all other Grange staff.
  • Working to enhance the good reputation of The Grange at all times.

Personal Development:

Depending on prior experience and skills level, we will fund either a Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship which will result in an AAT qualification. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to

  • Stay informed about the activities of The Grange by reading Monday Messages, Workplace and taking part in team meetings.
  • Attend courses, networking meetings and seminars and complete on-line training appropriate to the role.
  • Build their awareness and understanding of The Grange’s policies and procedures, and at all times embody and live out the values of the Grange.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with The Grange’s Health & Safety policy and follow all other Policies and Procedures as issued.
  • Carry out other appropriate duties that may be required from time to time by the Head of Finance and Transformation or other management team members.

This job description may be revised and duties may vary as the apprentice gains skills and expertise, to meet the evolving needs of The Grange, and in response to changes in legislation.

Course contents
  • Record transactional data.
  • Use the organisation’s standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as, reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Your training plan

    Level 2 Accountants / Finance Assistant apprenticeship standard.  This includes:

    • AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (Level 2).
    • Apprentices without Level 1 English and mathematics will need to achieve this level and have taken the test for Level 2 prior to taking their EPA.
