Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Due to their continued business growth and the success of their current apprentices, Lazerbeam Fire and Security are now looking to recruit four apprentices over the course of this year.

The new apprentices will initially be paired with an existing engineer and mentor. Lazerbeam Fire and Security are keen to offer individuals the chance to secure a career within the fire and security sector and are passionate about training and growing new talent.

These positions are full time, with block training release to Watford one week in every eight weeks - all travel is covered by the employer. 

The new apprentices will work on both areas - Security and Fire, and grow to become a multi disciplined engineer.

Each day can be different depending on the client and jobs that are to be completed.  This will include but not exhaustive to the installation, repair and maintenance of fire and security systems and door entry and systems.

Fire emergency and security systems technician (level 3)

Course contents
  • Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
  • Plan and install systems cabling.
  • Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
  • Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.
  • Your training plan

    Skills for Security will deliver the Level 3 apprenticeship.

    You will be required to complete all training tasks allocated during your block release weeks at the training centre and gathering any site evidence needed to supplement your studies.

    You will be required to complete an annual assessment at the training centre and take part in any additional training courses that the company require you to complete.

    Lazerbeam Fire and Security will provide on-the-job training from experiened engineers who will mentor the new apprenitces alongside their studies.

    Desirable qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • Maths (grade 4)
    • English Language (grade 4)

    Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

    Other requirements

    The apprenticeship is 36 months and therefore, full commitment is required. The employer will cover travel costs - an Oyster card will be provided if required. A company pension is available and a company van will be on offer when required. Overtime may be available.

    After this apprenticeship

    A full time Fire and Security engineer role may be on offer following completion of the apprenticeship. There is the option to progress from junior to senior engineer if a driving licence is obtained. Those who do not hold a drivers license will remain at a junior level.
