Summary

Caring for horses including mucking out, tack cleaning, all yard duties and riding under instruction if confident to do so. You will receive a thorough grounding of all horse related training ready to go out and confidently work in the equine industry.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • A fantastic opportunity to learn the skill required to start a career in the equine industry

Duties will include but not limited to;

  • Muck out
  • Prepare feeds,
  • Sweep the yard
  • Tidy the muck heap
  • Clean tack
  • Groom horses and wash tails etc.

All of these tasks will be under instruction until you are competent to work alone. There will be opportunities to ride if you are confident to do so.  You will receive thorough training on all aspects of equestrian yard work. You should wear suitable clothing and PPE must be adhered to.

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Course contents

Your training plan

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment. The applicant will be working towards and
    gain a Level 2 Equine Groom apprenticeship
  • The learner will be allocated an industry-specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on-site visits throughout the apprenticeship
  • The apprentice will work towards an End-Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship
  • Training towards BHS Stage Exams and Ride Safe

Desirable qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Maths and English (grade C or 4)

About this company

Tessa Spencer is an accredited Trainer and BHS Senior Coach, having trained many for the equestrian industry for the past 30 + years. We are a small competition livery yard with foaling facilities. We have quality horses and some youngsters which we train ready for competition. Currently we have one resident stallion.
