Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Ensuring the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, instruments and equipment) by the process of decontamination, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.
  • Rigorously checking, washing, laying-up and packing sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.
  • Safely operating and monitoring machines and equipment (washer / disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisers) effectively.
  • Ensuring that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system (SynergyTrak).
  • Ensuring that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets or the Trust’s appointed person.
  • To participate in staff development and training initiatives.
  • To actively participate in the Performance Management System.
  • To undertake any other duties or tasks as reasonably required.

  • Adhere to stock and equipment control policies.
  • Support the provision of person-centred care that is delivered by the wider healthcare team.
  • Support any care provided including adhering to the relevant requirements.
  • Follow policy and protocols that relate to informed consent.
  • Protect the dignity, rights and privacy of individuals.
  • Assist the wider healthcare team to enable individuals to make choices about their care.
  • Communicate basic information effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Use techniques to facilitate understanding and reduce communication barriers.
  • Keep accurate, confidential records including in a digital format.
  • Produce reliable data by logging, inputting, retrieving and storing information within required governance processes.
  • Follow protocols for handling, escalating or reporting difficult situations and complaints.
  • Work as part of the healthcare science team and the multi-professional team to provide healthcare science services.
  • Follow delegation, reporting and escalation protocols appropriate to own role.
  • Act as a role model to others and show leadership skills relevant to own role.
  • Contribute towards creating the conditions that assist the team in providing a supportive environment for colleagues.
  • Work safely in the workplace following safety guidelines.

  • Your training plan

    • You will be provided with 6 hours per week off-the-job training time to undertake this apprenticeship. This will be done at work.
