This role provides variety as well as the opportunity to gain experience in all departments that work together to form our great team. Although working patterns will be fixed, a degree of flexibility is essential to provide cover for holidays and sickness. Hours of work are between the hours of 08:00 and 18:30 but we also provide one late surgery a week until 20.00.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Answering calls from patients and third parties (e.g. pharmacies, hospitals)
  • Using practice systems like EMIS, askmyGP, Clarity Team Net, and AccuRx
  • Handling incoming calls and askmyGP requests promptly
  • Assisting patients and visitors at the reception desk
  • Managing patient queries about appointments, results, referrals, etc
  • Registering new, temporary, and emergency patients
  • Processing patient records and deductions as per practice protocols
  • Booking appointments, home visits, and consultations
  • Making calls on behalf of clinicians
  • Communicating clinical results and updating patient records
  • General admin tasks (photocopying, scanning, filing, etc.)
  • Opening and distributing mail
  • Keeping reception and waiting areas tidy
  • Typing and sending letters
  • Using Microsoft Office and chaperoning GPs (after training)
  • Disposing of confidential waste
  • Following all practice procedures and maintaining confidentiality
  • Other duties assigned by the Care Navigation Lead or Practice Manager

Course contents
  • Use a range of questioning skills, including listening and responding in a way that builds rapport, determines customer needs and expectations and achieves positive engagement and delivery.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, along with summarising language during face-to-face communications; and/or
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate communication skills, along with reinforcement techniques (to confirm understanding) during non-facing customer interactions.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use an appropriate ‘tone of voice’ in all communications, including written and digital, that reflect the organisation’s brand.
  • Provide clear explanations and offer options in order to help customers make choices that are mutually beneficial to both the customer and your organisation.
  • Be able to organise yourself, prioritise your own workload/activity and work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate patience and calmness.
  • Show you understand the customer’s point of view.
  • Use appropriate sign-posting or resolution to meet your customers needs and manage expectations.

    Delivery of this training will take a blended approach, predominantly online with some timetabled masterclasses at our Bridgwater or Taunton campus.

    About this company

    We are a rural dispensing practice with a main modern purpose-built surgery at Milborne Port Surgery and smaller branch surgery at Templecombe. We are a very friendly team with an excellent record of high patient satisfaction. We arrange regular staff social events and whole-practice meetings. We have a wide range of staff working at the practice including GPs, nurse practitioners, practice nurses, health coaches, in-house musculoskeletal physiotherapists, a midwife and clinical pharmacists.
