Our hybrid working model offers flexibility about where and when you work. Our expectation is that you will spend a minimum 60% of your time at your base location. Working hours are usually between 8am-6pm Mon -Fri and will be agreed with you.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Checking paperwork and liaising with courts and internal/external customers regarding cases/dates, ensuring that deadlines are met.
  • Deliver support to colleagues, generating and sending appropriate letters and proformas.
  • Accept receipt of new prosecution cases submitted via an IT system, checking accuracy.
  • Prepare summonses or postal charges and related documentation for cases to be presented at court.
  • Manage individual case load on a daily basis by using IT diaries.
  • Liaise with contracted solicitors and DVSA enforcement staff and appoint legal representation in the event of an appeal against a court decision.
  • Book hearing dates at Magistrates’ Courts, liaising between courts and DVSA staff.

Course contents
  • assist in administering procedures using most effective channels to progress caseloads.
  • conduct legal research using selected sources such as legal databases.
  • solve legal technical problems within their remit and escalating as needed.
  • present findings from legal research in line with organisational expectations.
  • assist in applying the principles of Law to stakeholder cases.
  • assist with legal matters and transactions within the organisation.
  • communicate using plain English to provide clarification and explanation of the legal process and standard legal terms.
  • organise and administer workflow such as legal files, case management and accounting systems to progress work within service level expectations.
  • carry out file management activities such as prepare and collate bundles, take and file accurate notes, close and review files, maintain databases and version control.
  • use a range of digital tools and technologies, for example to draft legal documents, conduct legal research, carry out data analysis and collaborate with others.
  • apply fraud protection measures and cyber security procedures in relation to transactions, keeping up to date with approaches.
  • undertake activities to ensure a clear picture of a stakeholder’s needs and risks throughout legal transactions.
  • assess risks and benefits to the stakeholder of different options and making recommendations to senior team members to ensure that they work in the stakeholders’ best interests.
  • Your training plan

    The apprenticeship will be delivered by Damar Training.  This apprenticeship is due to start in March 2025 and we will be looking to onboard successful applicants in February 2025.

    This apprenticeship will be delivered online. You’ll be fully supported to meet the learning requirements of the qualification.

    Other requirements

    If you currently hold or are working towards a similar qualification of the same level or higher i.e. L3 Paralegal qualification, then you will not be eligible to apply for this vacancy. Any qualifications previously held or currently being worked towards must differ in content so that this apprenticeship provides substantial new skills.

    After this apprenticeship

    This role is a Fixed Term appointment for a maximum length of 24 months, there will be a possibility of becoming a permanent Prosecution & Legal Services Case Officer once the apprenticeship has been completed. 

    Once qualified you will have the opportunity to progress within DVSA and the wider civil service.
