This role of IT Apprentice - Application and Data Engineer is a great chance to get hands-on business IT experience. You'll start by handling and looking into incidents and requests. Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • ​Taking the lead on sorting out and fixing issues right away, and figuring out how to stop them from happening again
  • Looking at requests for changes to applications and making the necessary technical adjustments to meet those needs
  • Learning how to write SQL queries to quickly get the data needed for special requests
  • Helping coordinate between internal teams and external service providers to manage application maintenance and rollouts
  • Supporting the testing of application features, including how they work with other systems (APIs)
  • Keeping up-to-date with current systems and improving the documentation, including creating user-friendly self-help guides
  • Picking up new technologies and spotting ways to improve applications
  • Assisting the IT Service Desk in boosting the rate of first-time fixes and enhancing issue sorting processes

Course contents
  • create logical and maintainable code
  • develop effective user interfaces
  • link code to data sets
  • test code and analyse results to correct errors found using unit testing
  • conduct a range of test types, such as Integration, System, User Acceptance, Non-Functional, Performance and Security testing.
  • identify and create test scenarios
  • apply structured techniques to problem solving, debug code and understand the structure of programmes in order to identify and resolve issues
  • create simple software designs to effectively communicate understanding of the program
  • create analysis artefacts, such as use cases and/or user stories
  • build, manage and deploy code into the relevant environment
  • apply an appropriate software development approach according to the relevant paradigm (for example object oriented, event driven or procedural)
  • follow software designs and functional or technical specifications
  • follow testing frameworks and methodologies
  • follow company, team or client approaches to continuous integration, version and source control
  • communicate software solutions and ideas to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • apply algorithms, logic and data structures
  • interpret and implement a given design whist remaining compliant with security and maintainability requirements
