Summary

As a Higher Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, you will play a crucial role in assisting our Regional Commercial Manager and Quantity Surveyors in the financial management and performance of contracts. Work

  • Financial Management: Assist in the negotiation, management, and performance tracking of contracts and sub-contracts.
  • Commercial Support: Get involved in procurement, supplier engagement, and the financial control of contracts.
  • Health & Safety: Contribute to maintaining high standards of health, safety, and environmental practices on all projects.
  • Personal Development: Work towards your NVQ Level 4 and HNC qualifications, attend apprenticeship training, and grow your expertise in Quantity Surveying.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to statutory legislation and company regulations.

  • Develop skills in procurement, revenue management, and cost control.
  • Support in preparing payment certificates and financial reports.
  • Attend training sessions and complete all apprenticeship requirements.

Course contents
  • Be able to apply and evaluate the principles for the avoidance of conflict and dispute resolution such as adjudication and arbitration between project stakeholders
  • Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work
  • Analyse costs and benefits of sustainability initiatives on a project
  • Be able to advise on the legal aspects of a project and the most suitable form of contract to be used to ensure fairness and efficiency
  • Be able to advise on the most suitable construction solutions that maximise value for clients and enhance the cost effectiveness of the project within the budget constraints
  • Be able to advise on the appropriateness of various procurement routes and manage and report on the tendering and negotiation processes to select specialist contractors
  • Advise on appropriate methods of measurement of completed works and issue documentation required for payment to specialist contractors and income from client
  • Advise construction team and the client on strategies to control predicted expenditure in line with the budget
  • Carry out risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate risk
  • Monitor, report and advise construction team on project cashflows and profitability. Evaluate and advise on financial implications of decisions during the construction phase
  • Assess, interpret and report on progress and assist in the control of programmes during the construction phase
  • Your training plan

    • You will 'earn while you learn' by completing a Higher Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveyor while working on a Heidelberg Materials site.
    • During the thirty month programme you will gain experience and relevant qualifications in operational aspects of our business alongside blended learning, delivered by The University of Northumbria from which you will receive a Degree.
    • You will be supported by your line manager, and assigned a mentor, as well as receiving first class training internally. 

    Requirements

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • 5 subjects including Maths, English and Science (grade 4 (C) or above)
    • 2 subjects including a STEM subject (grade Grades A-C Grade 112+ UCAS pts)
    • UK Driving Licence (grade Full or in progress by Sept)

    After this apprenticeship

    Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship and the Heidelberg Materials programme you could progress to a supervisory role. From your fourth year Hanson will also fund and enable you to top up your studies towards a full honours degree in minerals management over an additional two-year period.
