Summary

You will work with your team to provide comprehensive financial support and advice; and assist with the annual reporting cycle, including financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and reporting processes for your area of responsibility.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties:

  • Assist as required in the annual financial reporting cycle, including the preparation of monthly management accounts, forecast outturns, year end accounts, annual budgets and five year plans
  • Assist as required with month end procedures including:
    - Calculation of accruals and prepayments
    - Preparation and input of journals onto Oracle Financials, the University’s accounting system
    - Analysis of income and expenditure variances to budget
    - Preparation of financial reconciliations
    - Production of monthly and other ad hoc financial reports – distributed to budget holders as appropriate
  • Seek opportunities to continuously improve procedures as necessary to adequately support the business activities
  • Be familiar with the Financial Regulations, Procedures, Purchasing Policy and any other documents as issued by the Office of the Director of Finance from time to time, and give advice on compliance thereto
  • Cover the workload of other colleagues in times of absence to provide efficient and flexible support across the School/Directorates within the Faculty
  • Maintain confidentiality of information in line with data protection requirements and University policy
  • Comply with Health and Safety requirements, including having an awareness of personal responsibilities to maintain a safe working environment
  • Perform associated miscellaneous duties as determined by the Head of School/Directorate Finance or the Head of Faculty Financial Reporting and Analysis as necessary

During your apprenticeship, you will:

  • Attend study with an appropriate provider to gain the designated apprenticeship.
  • Spend at least 20% of your time 'off the job’ learning and developing Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours.
  • Participate in all UoM apprentice network events and skills competitions.
  • Log and record all work activities and training making these available for review during 1:1’s.
  • Be supported by a series of experienced members of staff.

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
