Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Primary duties:
- Greeting patients, booking them in to clinics.
- Answering the telephone, booking appointments.
- Taking accurate messages where appropriate.
- Registering new patients and temporary patients – checking identity.
- Working closely with and supporting Doctors (GPs), Nurses, Midwives, Health Visitors / Nursery Nurse, Phlebotomists, Healthcare Assistants, Counsellors, Visiting Consultants.
- Maintaining electronic appointment systems.
Additional duties may include:
- Maintaining website information.
- Helping to draft patient newsletters.
- Liaising with hospitals, social services and other agencies.
- Maintaining electronic medical records, scanning letters and medical documents and use of an electronic document management system.
- Using MS Office software WORD and EXCEL / Networked computers.
- Using the EMIS web medical records system.
- Using emails and Internet / NHS.Net.
- Maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and information governance.
- Typing confidential referral letters and reports.
- Use of office equipment: computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, laminator.
- Assisting with health promotion campaigns e.g. Flu vaccination, Cervical screening, Childhood immunisation programme, Chlamydia screening etc.

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- English (grade 4/C)
- Maths (grade 4/C)
