Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The following duties and roles should be realised in addition to industry standard responsibilities of such a role:

  • Assist/support in establishing, developing and managing relationships with appropriate parties, delivering exceptional client service and ensuring JSF(UK) Ltd are first point of call for client representatives
  • Develop and maintain internal ‘team’ ethos through colleague respect, interaction, support and personal development
  • Consult with internal PM/design team during inception/feasibility stage, to understand client briefs
  • Develop skills to review site survey outputs (detailed outputs including fully dimensioned site survey, dilapidations schedule, photographic survey and logistics plan) and assist in population of procurement schedule, in line with dates as per Key Event Schedule (KES), to be maintained throughout the project
  • Co-operate with internal team throughout pre-construction period to ensure budget efficiencies are delivered on process, products, programme and prelims
  • Liaise with internal design team and specialist suppliers design team in development of design pack, whilst paying due cognisance to project budgets and driving efficiencies
  • Develop skills to maintain, monitor and issue KES regarding procurement and estimating activities, including updating of new projects when added to the schedule
  • Assist in negotiating and maintaining preferential, supply rates and credit terms for suppliers of materials, plant and equipment for use across the UK
  • Liaise/support in developing and maintaining ongoing supplier relationships and developing new supplier relationships, producing economical and logistical beneficial outcomes to JSF (UK) Ltd
  • Aid the creation, development and issue a construction estimate based on survey details, sub-contractor returns and developed design pack
  • Assist in the preparation of procurement and estimating progress reports, via KES dashboard (to be developed) flagging any issues and proposing mitigation method
  • Review pre-construction resources (materials, labour and equipment) with attention to budgetary limitations to develop commercial/product knowledge. Maintain integrity of supply chain database for materials, plant equipment and specialist contractors
  • Develop ability to use appropriate verification techniques to manage changes in project scope, schedule and costs
  • Review project drawing design pack, specification and installation manuals, and produce draft detailed quantity document and updated procurement schedule
  • Assist in negotiation within budgetary constraints, and record/issue formal orders for suppliers, via email and internal finance system
  • Assist in maintenance of warehouse inventory system, optimising use of retained client system parts, returned/stocked materials and equipment, and stocked client system ready for delivery to site, including ordering of replacement items to maintain stock levels
  • Record materials returned from site and addition to inventory, establishing and maintaining a ‘picking’ system to ensure efficient warehouse operation and distribution of materials
  • Provide assistance in management of purchase ledger invoices on receipt and collation along with order/signed delivery tickets. Verifying invoices align with order are costed correctly/have been received, approving invoices and resolving any discrepancies, prior to senior management sign off
  • Report and escalate any issues or improvements to management

  • Apply and integrate appropriate mathematical and technical knowledge in the completion of built environment site and/or office processes to contribute to the coordination of construction projects.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and procedures. Identify and document risks and hazards. Apply statutory and company environmental and safe working practices. Produce construction project risk assessment and method statements.
  • Communicate verbally to internal and external stakeholders using a range of techniques in line with company policies.
  • Interpret and abstract contract documentation to develop site solutions.
  • Apply digital construction processes to produce resource lists from tender and contract documentation.
  • The use of project tendering, measurement and costing systems to assist with the planning of schedules of work and to provide early warning of problems for all contract phases on site.
  • Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with management requirements, assessing tasks, scheduling work, achieving deadlines, reviewing performance and keeping records of work undertaken.
  • Apply sustainable principles and low carbon processes in order to implement site environmental solutions.
  • Use information technology. For example, for document creation, communication, and information management. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
  • Plan and undertake continued professional development (CPD) to maintain and enhance competence in their own area of practice.
  • Communicate in written form to internal and external stakeholders using a range of techniques and reporting mechanisms in line with company policies, using construction and built environment terminology.

    Construction Support Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

    • Training will be at Doncaster College where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer
    • Day release
    • You will undertake Functional Skills for English and/or Maths if needed   
    • You will undertake both on and off-the-job training by a team of industry qualified professionals to give you the best skills, knowledge and experience that will help you become a Project Manager of the future

    You must be able to travel to and from work and college. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that is part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
