Summary

As an apprentice with Sotham you will work alongside experienced staff who will assign you electrical tasks relevant to the works you will be studying at college and appropriate to your ability level. You will initially be given guidance and instruction on key installation tasks, building up to being able to complete items of work yourself.

Sotham Engineering are a member of the Joint Industries Board and comply with the JIB National Agreement. Stage 1 apprentice rate is £6.40 per hour.

The basic working week is 37.5 hours per week. The working week is Monday to Friday. The work involves early starts in order to be on site at 7:00am or 7:30am in the morning. Shifts will be worked between 7:00am to 4:30pm. 30 minute break every day.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

We are looking for an Electrical apprentice interested in learning to:

  • Understand electrical, mechanical and architectural drawings and diagrams to determine job specifications and requirements.
  • Plan and measure the layout of wiring systems.
  • Test, find and repair electrical problems.
  • Install and fix electrical and electronic control systems, cables, outlets and equipment.
  • Connect electrical equipment to power supplies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To learn to carry out a range of electrical installations in new and occupied properties including:
  • Diagnosis of electrical faults.
  • Testing and maintenance of electrical wiring.
  • Equipment, appliances, apparatus and fixtures such as renewing consumer control unit, fuse/RCD/MCB; cookers, fans , fire alarm, sockets, switches, external lighting, shower units and electrical heating systems.
  • Using hand and power tools to current legislative standards, performance standards and in accordance with company procedures under the guidance of qualified trade employees, suited to the current level of training and development.
  • To learn to complete all necessary paperwork and NICEIC records to current legislative standards.
  • To attend college and complete coursework on time and to a high standard.
  • To carry out necessary administrative duties including the production of timesheets and recording of safety information.
  • To liaise and work with all other trades and apprentices as required.
  • To understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
  • To comply with all Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • To attend and fully participate in regular training and reviews with the mentor and line manager.
  • To undertake additional duties in line with capabilities, as required.

  • Maintain the safety of self and others by applying statutory health and safety policies, procedures, and regulations when conducting electrical work.
  • Comply with all relevant legislation including environmental, regulations, codes of practice and other relevant information and guidance when planning and performing electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be used when undertaking electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Carry out work in a tidy and safe manner, including restoration of the work area on completion of work.
  • Use verbal and written communication techniques suitable for the context, adapting style and use of terminology to suit the audience. Uses industry terminology.
  • Apply customer service principles and techniques to deliver customer or client service in industrial, commercial and communal residential environments.
  • Apply relevant legislation; Building Regulations; industry guidance notes; relevant codes of practice, the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and other relevant standards while carrying out work.
  • Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.
  • Apply and use necessary mathematical and scientific techniques, formulae, and calculations that underpin an electrician’s work.
  • Use a range of tools, materials, equipment, and components, including prefabricated, relevant to performing electrical work in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Design, plan, set up, and install electrical and related electronic systems including terminating and connecting cables in electrical wiring systems, installations, and equipment in commercial, industrial, and residential installations.
  • Inspect and test new and where applicable existing electrical Installations in industrial, commercial and residential environments using test equipment.
  • Apply diagnostic and problem-solving techniques to identify, assess and resolve electrical faults in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Install electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
  • Carry out and manage own work ensuring work is compliant to the standards required of an electrician working in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Record work including the completion and maintenance of work documentation, recording of test results and preparation of appropriate certification.
  • Use relevant digital learning platforms and business communication and collaboration applications.
  • Your training plan

    For the full apprenticeship, candidates will complete:

    • Level 3 Installation & Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship Standard.
    • Electrotechnical Apprenticeship Qualification
    • Functional Skills in English and maths if required
    • AM2

    For the End Point Assessment (EPA) apprentices will undertake a practical competency assessment (17 hours over 2.5 days), a scenario- based interview and a multiple- choice knowledge test.

    Apprentices are expected to attend college one day per week (term-time only) at the Ipswich Road campus, located near Norwich city centre.

    Other requirements

    Applicants who are currently undertaking or sitting GCSEs should include their predicted grades on their application. If successful for this position, you will be offered a conditional place on the apprenticeship, subject to you meeting the entry requirements listed above. Please be aware that this is the Installation & Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship standard, and work will only be completed in commercial, residential and industrial settings. The work involves early starts in order to be on site at 7:00am or 7:30am in the morning. Most sites are in Norfolk but this might mean travelling up to 1 hour away from Norwich. Allowances are paid to all staff on top of the basic rates of pay to cover both travel time to site and fuel if using own vehicle. Work is often in partially complete unheated buildings on construction sites. Some site safety clothing and footwear is provided. The apprentice will receive 20 days paid holiday plus bank holidays.

    • A position may be available for the right candidate following successful completion of the apprenticeship. The business is looking for somebody who wants to develop and gain a position following their apprenticeship.

    Within the construction industry it is common for employees to start on site as apprentices and work their way through the company structure to higher levels of management and even directorship. Apprentices would be encouraged to develop and to take on responsibilities as they progress.
