Rail engineering operative (level 2)
Hours
Work often takes place at night and at weekends when trains are least likely to operate. This ensures safety of key staff and limits disruption to passenger services. Shifts are mostly planned Sunday through to Thursday; 22:00 to 06:00.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Key tasks and responsibilities of LU Track Engineering Apprentice will include:

  • Reconditioning works (Deep tube).
  • Adjusting, replacing and installing conductor rails
  • Maintaining, removing, replacing and installing joints
  • Track re-aligning
  • Lifting and replacing points and crossings
  • Shovel and kango packing
  • Digging out and reballasting
  • Spot sleepering, Replacing keys and clips
  • Refurbishing or plugging holes in wooden sleepers
  • Re-railing
  • All works undertaken in ballasted track and deep tube concrete tracks.

Your training plan

Training and development of key skills, knowldge and behaviours will take place at the company's head quarters and state of the art training facility in Wembley, North West London. Training will mostly consist of block release where you will attend the training centre with one of our industry expeienced and dedicated trainers.

After this apprenticeship

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, apprentcies will have the oppotunity of progression to a L3 technician standard including development to supervisory and management oppotunities within the business.
