Summary

The role will give the successful candidate excellent opportunities to develop a valuable and wide-ranging skill set including technical, communication, and teamwork. There will be exposure to estimating and tendering commercial construction, supporting senior estimators and refurbishment projects along with quantity surveying duties.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Taking off drawings and production of bill of quants
  • Estimating from first principles
  • Packaging and collection of sub-contractor packages
  • Production of tender documents

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Construction quantity surveying technician (level 4)

Equal to higher national certificate (HNC)

Course contents
  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

    Requirements

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE in:

    • English and Maths (grade C/4)

    Desirable qualifications

    A Level in:

    • Any (grade 112 UCAS Points (BBC))
    • Any (grade 112 UCAS Points (DMM))

    After this apprenticeship

    Upon successful completion of the Construction QS Technician (CertHE Quantity Surveying), you will be required to enrol onto the Construction Quantity Surveyor Top-Up (BSc Hons Quantity Surveying) to complete the full degree (total of five years for both courses).

    Once the full five-year programme has been completed, there will be scope to go up to a Senior estimator/QS role, then management opportunities.
