As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The opportunities as an Intelligence Analyst (Int An) are broad and varied. Information is collected from multiple sources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In your role you will:

  • Collect, collate and evaluate intelligence from multiple sources
  • Monitor and analyse radio and electronic transmissions broadcast throughout the world
  • Analyse and interpret aerial or satellite imagery using high tech systems
  • Disseminate tailored intelligence to commanders, aircrew or troops on the ground

Course contents
  • Engage with clients appropriately to ensure effective understanding of intelligence tasks and actively monitor ongoing intelligence requirements, engaging with all levels in an organisation, the customer and other interested parties in order to respond to demands.
  • Recommend what information should be collected based upon identified intelligence gaps, and/or issue requests for information to external organisations to collect or process information.
  • Identify, review, and interpret significant information, applying organisationally appropriate analytical techniques such as the use of diagnostics (links, patterns, and trends), scenario generation and validating assessments to identify key findings and opportunities for further analysis.
  • Think critically, through objective analysis and evaluation of an issue, to form a judgement which is unbiased, undistorted and can withstand challenge.
  • Produce written reports to a high standard as well as confident verbal briefings and presentation of findings, using an appropriate range of methods dependent on factors like audience, available time and the organisation’s culture.
  • Obtain client views on outcomes so as to feed back into the Intelligence Cycle and enrich the process of collection, processing, dissemination.
  • Use existing and emerging IT (including digital) applications in the analysis, development and dissemination of intelligence products in line with organisational requirements.
  • Operate in accordance with applicable security and legislative responsibilities such as applying appropriate audit trails, handling instructions, and protective markings, including the Official Secrets’ Act.
  • Organise appropriate disposal when working with sensitive materials.

    • Your training plan

    • On successful completion of the application and selection process, your apprenticeship will start with a 10-week Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire
    • The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle
    • Upon successful completion of BRTC you will move to MOD Chicksands to complete Phase 2 training. - Here, you will learn the fundamentals of Air Intelligence. This course is designed to train you in the basics of Operational Intelligence (OPINT). It will give you a good understanding of the sources of information, and the techniques for processing  them. You will also develop the skills to disseminate it effectively through written or graphical means, including the delivery of a detailed but concise intelligence briefing.
    • The course also covers the roles of UK intelligence organisations such as Defence Intelligence (DI), and the RAF intelligence structure. You will learn about IT applications, research techniques and military mapping which concludes with a final exercise. This will be the culmination of all your training where you will put all your new skills into practice in a real time environment. Whilst undergoing Phase 2 training, you will also begin the RAF Apprenticeship that will allow you to gain civilian accredited qualifications. On successful completion of the course, you will graduate as an Air Specialist (Class 2) (AS2) and be posted to your first tour of duty.

    The role is varied and, after training, you could be stationed across the UK and beyond. • Multi-Stage Fitness Test (MSFT) – This test is Age and Gender fair. The physical standards are to RAF Green Standard.
