Summary

This Level 5 Children, Young People & Families Practitioner apprenticeship training programme develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work with children, young people and families to achieve positive outcomes and sustainable change in their everyday lives over the course of 18 months.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Working under the direction of the Registered Manager/Assistant Manager, actively contributing to the provision of quality of care, within which the health, welfare, education and development of young people is promoted and to promote a coherent ethos of care consistent with the overall culture of the company and the Homes statement of purpose
  • To contribute towards the maintenance of a positive, safe and homely environment, including the promotion of a warm and accepting atmosphere, where the safety and care of young people is paramount. Working with the Registered Manager/Assistant Manager to ensure proper and appropriate nurturing for all young people with particular attention to the provision of primary care in matters of food, health, clothing and environment
  • In conjunction with the Registered Manager/Assistant Manager work proactively with and direct the team within the daily routine and agreed structures of the house, to include for example day-to- day parenting responsibilities, undertaking daily household responsibilities such as domestic chores, cooking, shopping, taking young people to appointments/meetings, planning out the day and participation in activities with the young people and supporting in education
  • To work in partnership with parents, social workers, agencies and other professionals linked to the young person’s care plan to effectively fulfil the responsibility of parenting the young people, ensuring the maintenance of family contact where appropriate
  • As directed by the Registered Manager/Assistant Manager undertake keyworker responsibility for individual young people in the house focusing on the specific needs identified in the care plan. Contribute to the writing of the care plan, implementing and monitoring progress
  • To follow and act in accordance with all relevant aspects of legislation, regulation, and the company’s Policies and Procedures. Ensure own understanding of how such issues are interpreted and followed in practice, keeping up to date with changes
  • To work collectively with team members and advise on using effective therapeutic care practice, de-escalating and diversionary strategies and recognised techniques to manage young people who exhibit challenging, threatening and confrontational behaviour. Consistently act in accordance with company Behaviour Management policy and ensure appropriate recording of incidents, accidents or physical injury
  • Take the lead in decision-making, ensure paperwork is completed to the required standards, and ensure effective handovers take place at the beginning and end of each shift
  • Undertake appropriate training, including any refresher training in specified areas as identified by the Registered Manager or Assistant Manager
  • Accompanying children and young people on recreational activities and demonstrating positive role modelling
  • To attend home visits and to provide a specialist outreach service to young persons, family and carers, as and when required
  • To participate in case reviews where necessary and to provide support and assistance when difficulties arise
  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons that the jobholder is responsible for, or comes into contact with and to regularly stay updated in relation to any changes within safeguarding legislation and policy
  • To report immediately to management any noticeable changes in health, behaviour or circumstances of our children and young people – maintaining their right to privacy and confidentiality
  • To be a key member of the care team and has the ability to work within a team
  • To be innovative, creative and flexible, and has an open mind and a willingness to learn
  • Able to demonstrate empathy, sensitivity, self-awareness and acceptance of others

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above)
