What you’ll do at work
We Are looking to take on an Apprentice Dental Nurse to join our small friendly team. You do not need any previous experience, as full training will be provided. We are a forward thinking practice, always looking towards the latest technologies and systems to help give the best care possible.
At Lonsdale Dental Practice, we carry out a wide range of treatments, such as Dental Implants, Endodontics, Gum grafting and more providing you with excellent opportunities to learn and grow as you progress in your career.
You will learn on the job whilst working towards your level 3 Dental Nurse Qualification. All of our team are available to support you through your studies and training.
Your main duties will be to assist clinicians in their day to day treatments, provide excellent patient care and carry out effective decontamination of instruments and the surgeries. You will also assist our receptionist to ensure you learn all areas of the job role.
As we are located in Kirkby Lonsdale, your own transport will be required.
The duties within this role include:
- Assist the dentist/therapist/hygienist during all clinical procedures
- Carry out and be responsible for all Health and Safety and cross-infection policies and procedures within the dental surgery
- Assist the dentist during all clinical procedures in the surgery which will include fillings, root canal treatment, bridge crown and denture preparation and extractions
- Assessments, this may also include minor oral surgery
- Assist the hygienist with scale and polish and oral health promotion plus charting and periodontal assessments
- Record and store notes, charting, medical history and radiographs on either paper-based or computerised systems
- Reception duties which include answering the telephone, greeting patients, making appointments and recording them correctly on the system
- Disposing of all waste correctly, including clinical, sharps, specialist, amalgam, and normal domestic
- Assisting with the preparation of the patient and equipment during the taking of x-rays and processing and storing all images

- Manage and perform effective decontamination and infection control procedures complying with legislative, local and current best practice guidelines
- Mix, handle, store and dispose of materials in line with manufacturers recommendations
- Create and update accurate and current patient records, including social, medical and dental history, storing and archiving them securely and in line with legislation
- Carry out processing of radiographs in line with local procedures and rules
- Make effective decisions regarding the safety of patients when taking a radiograph
- Deliver appropriate and current evidence-based oral and general health advice
- Recognise and support action to deal with medical emergencies
- Respond to medical emergencies and be competent in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Take part in appraisal and ongoing review processes
- Take part in continuous professional development activities
- Reflect on how your daily practice complies with the General Dental Council requirements for continual improvement
- Comply with personal development planning as specified by the General Dental Council
- Participate in quality improvement activities as required
- Be collaborative and work as part of the team

After this apprenticeship
The successful candidate will work towards achieving a Level 3 qualification in Dental Nursing with experience in a busy dental practice.
Upon completion of the Level 3 qualification, you will be an experienced and qualified dental nurse, and as such you can continue building up skills that will always be in demand. You could then progress to acquire specialist qualifications in areas such as sedation, dental radiography and oral health education.
You may take on more responsibilities as a trainer for other dental nurses or move into a management role within your dental practice, or decide to apply for a course to qualify as a dental hygienist or therapist.
