As an Apprentice Finishing Assistant at Graphic Packaging, you will support the production process efficiently and effectively by ensuring all finishing activities are carried out to company standards, working under the supervision of a skilled team.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- Support the Finishing Operator to run the Gluing machines
- Sort product into good/bad which has been quarantined in any production workshop. This includes sorting on the run.
- Follow quarantine procedures
- Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in the quarantine areas
- Cover for absence in the department as requested by the Coordinator/Manager. Duties will include:
- Feed the gluing machine to maintain running speeds and to ensure output is not slow
- Housekeeping of the Gluing Machine area, ensuring the area is clean, tidy, and safe
- To monitor the quality of the machine and its output, ensuring all work meets the required standards expected by timely quality checks, and supporting housekeeping and Quality Audits
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and all procedures to ensure compliance is consistent throughout
- Complete all necessary paperwork regarding the effective running of the Gluing machine
- Packing from Gluing machine; filling the cases of cartons onto wooden pallets at the end of the process
- Operate a PIV (Powered Industrial Vehicle) safely and appropriately
- To operate the PECAS work-ticket system effectively

- Follow quality control processes during printing, including checking for colour matching, print resolution, product consistency.
- Apply press equipment and machinery maintenance techniques including cleaning and servicing.
- Follow machine shut down, safe isolation, hand over procedures. Escalate issues.
- Apply press quality assurance procedures.
- Apply safe systems of work to the printing press process in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidelines. This should include identifying risks and hazards and the handling and disposal of chemicals.
- Set up finishing equipment for example, guillotines, stitching-trimming machinery, binding machinery, laminating equipment, die-cutters.
- Operate finishing equipment to apply different finishing processes, for example, varnishing, folding, embossing and debossing, foil blocking, scoring, packing, gluing, match and attach, tab and slot, sorting, banding.
- Prepare printing for next stage, including packing and wrapping.
- Apply post-press equipment maintenance techniques including cleaning and servicing.
- Apply post-press quality assurance procedures such as checking for folding accuracy, stitch alignment, foil position.
- Apply safe systems of work to the finishing process in compliance with regulations, standards and guidelines, including the handling and disposal of chemicals.

Your training plan
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, the qualification obtained will be a Level 3 Print Technician Apprenticeship Standard. This will include Functional Skills in English and maths if required.
Graphic Packaging International will ensure that the apprentice will gain experience, confidence and trade skills that will lead them into a career within an operational environment. The apprentice training will be a mixture of classroom-based education complemented with hands on training. Once completed the apprentice will gain a industry recognised qualification.

- Throughout your time as an apprentice, you will be supported by both your employer and BPIF Training to achieve the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship through a structured training plan.
- You will be assigned a training coordinator who will work with you throughout your apprenticeship to ensure that you have the best training and support available.
- Most training and studying will be a combination of regular site-based visits at the employer's premises and occasional remote delivery.
