Summary

With a strong emphasis on farming machinery, you will develop skills and competency in a wide range of technical areas, from routine maintenance and servicing to sophisticated component overhauls using the most advanced diagnostic equipment. Engineering is a practical subject and requires a great deal of focus and thought.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Performing basic service tasks & developing skills in the removal & reconditioning of components
  • Progressing to perform more complex service & repair tasks, both at the dealership & out in the field
  • Assisting qualified Technicians as needed
  • Reporting to a mentor regarding ongoing activities and progression
  • Maintaining the condition of inventory, tools & equipment
  • Participating in Service Training programmes required for the development of skills & knowledge
  • Following all safety rules and regulations

Course contents
  • Select and apply appropriate tools and equipment, demonstrate dexterity, resourcefulness, and a professional approach to service engineering practice.
  • Maintain and conduct basic repairs and maintenance activities on power units, and power trains, mechanical equipment, plant and machinery and their associated systems and components either under supervision or following procedures and service schedules prepared by the manufacturer or employer.
  • Thermally and chemically join metals and materials.
  • Access and interpret technical data relating to service and maintenance operations in accordance with the manufacturer’s documentation.
  • Communicate with customers and colleagues expressing technical information in clear concise terms whilst demonstrating customer care principles.
  • Work efficiently both under supervision, individually and as a team member.
  • Demonstrate a logical, safe and systematic approach to work practices.
  • Carry out operational tests on low technology plant, equipment and machinery.
  • Communicate using a range of methods. This will include delivering oral and written reports to colleagues and customers regarding the work carried out on equipment

    • Level 2 Land Based Service Engineer Qualification
    • Functional Skills in Maths & English (if required)
    • Blended on/off the job training and location to be confirmed
    • Training schedule has yet to be agreed upon, further details will be made available at a later date

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English & Maths (grade C/4 or above)

    After this apprenticeship

    • Upon completion of the Level 2 apprenticeship there may be the opportunity to undertake the Level 3 Land-Based Service Engineering Technician Apprenticeship, further developing knowledge and skills
    • As a fully qualified John Deere Agricultural Technician you will have access to further development opportunities within the company, extending your skills with additional training in areas such as compressed gas handling, welding, and, abrasive wheels, as well as going on to achieve LTA levels 3 and 4 (Master Technician) qualifications.
