Summary

An exciting opportunity to join the NHS as an apprentice in our Respiratory Physiology team. Working with clinical professionals to perform neurophysiological investigations for patients of all ages with a range of medical conditions across the Trust sites or local community, whilst undertaking Level 6 Healthcare Science degree apprenticeship.

During the apprenticeship programme the rate of pay will be band 5 NHS Agenda for Change, on completion of the apprenticeship programme salary will NHS Agenda for Change band 6 (starting salary £37338pa)

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Perform routine lung function tests
  • Assists in the provision of the sleep diagnostic and therapeutic service
  • Responsible for the safe use and maintenance of own equipment within the Respiratory Physiology section
  • Participates in research and development activities within Respiratory Medicine (under supervision)

Course contents
  • prevent discriminatory practice against patients/carers/colleagues

  • develop effective partnerships with patients, treating patients/carers/families with kindness and compassion

  • work within your scope of practice as an autonomous practitioner
  • promote the professional development/training of junior colleagues
  • manage delegated junior staff training in security/health/safety practices that underpin their work, especially in infection control
  • undertake delegated risk assessments & implement changes
  • strategically plan clinical and quality management processes
  • undertake delegated clinical technical audits in your area of work
  • independently analyse/interpret accurately clinical technical data
  • be responsible for the safety and functioning of equipment
  • present/explain technical results to other professionals & patients
  • coordinate drafting of SOPs & updating techniques/procedures
  • evaluate and implement solutions to clinical technical problems
  • ensure that responsibilities for safeguarding and protecting patient confidentiality, including record keeping, are met
  • conduct sensitive discussions with patients as required, including obtaining meaningful consent
  • supervise the delivery of high quality clinical technical procedures
  • manage audit and/or service improvement programmes
  • act on the outcomes of audit/service improvement programmes
  • use research, reasoning and problem solving skills to support quality care improvements/innovation in your area of work
  • coordinate leadership activities across a HCS technical team

    Requirements

    Essential qualifications

    A Level or equivalent in:

    • Any (grade D)
    • Maths & English (grade 4 or equivalent)
    • Science - preferably biology or physiology (grade D)
    • (educated to degree level) (grade 2:1)

    After this apprenticeship

    • Following completion of the level 6 degree, the role will continue as a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Neurophysiology)
    • Further progression through in-house training in other Neuroplogical investigations, including nerve conduction studies and completion of professional examinations.
    • May be further opportunities to progress to The Scientist Training Programme (STP), should an opening become available (after a suitale period of under graduate experience).
