Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • You’ll be part of an indispensable close-knit team of logisticians who ensure your colleagues and crewmates all over the world have what they need to be operationally effective, whether they’re delivering humanitarian aid or deployed on a combat mission. That means everything from bullets to bed linen, to fuel and food. Without you, global naval operations would literally grind to a halt
  • Learn about managing a complex global supply chain, and how to source the items you need, all over the world
  • Learn additional skills as an Incident Board operator, helping damage-control teams fight fires and floods

  • Conduct risk assessments within the working environment.
  • Apply safe working practices in line with associated health and safety legislation and company policy.
  • Receive products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Store and pick products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Dispatch products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Decant, pack products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Communicate with others verbally, for example internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
  • Communicate in writing with others, for example internal and external customers, colleagues and managers.
  • Load and unload products, considering the product that is to be moved and its current and planned destination.
  • Use tools and equipment to aid in product handling.
  • Use information technology and digital systems. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
  • Locate and use operational information, electronic or paper based, required to fulfil contractual requirements.
  • Select, prepare, and use packaging materials that reduce waste and mitigate environmental impacts.
  • support under instruction scheduled and unscheduled stock taking activities relevant to the organisation and product.
  • Identify and escalate problems beyond own responsibility.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion rules.
  • Carry out and record learning and development activities.
  • Conducts handover activities.
  • Your training plan

    • Once you have completed your training you will be a qualified Supply Chain Logistician (Supply Chain Warehouse Operative Level 2)

    You’ll start your naval career as an Able Rate. With experience and further training, you could be promoted to Leading Hand and beyond. If you show the right commitment, skills and academic ability, you could become a Commissioned Officer.

    Training and development continues throughout your career with the Royal Navy. It takes place in two distinct environments: at onshore training facilities and on-board operational ships.

    Follow on training consists of 14 weeks of role-specific training, focussing on:

    • Responsibility of the duty SC
    • Healthy and Safety
    • Defence Equipment and Support Organisation
    • Manual handling and personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Type of Storerooms
    • Security of storerooms
    • Customer Contact/ Services

    Desirable qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • Math and English (grade GCSE Level C/4)
