We thrive through 'learning journeys' that explore our indoor and outdoors to the full, and we are seeking an apprentice to help us with this.

£22,737 a year

Starting salary is £22,737 per year. You will be employed by Southampton City Council under their terms and conditions.

37 hour week, 52 weeks a year. Normal shift pattern 7.50am to 4.05pm with a 45 minute unpaid lunch break.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To maintain the garden and woodland space as an area of EYFS Learning and exploration
  • To demonstrate a sound understanding of the Early Years’ Foundation Stage
  • To assist in providing a stimulating environment that encourages the learning and development of young children through play in the outdoor, garden and woodland environmen
  • To maintain and use resources appropriately in providing play and early education opportunities that meet the needs of individual children whilst ensuring quality standards are maintained
  • To be a positive role model when engaging with children and parents/carers, in order to promote the development of social, emotional and communication skills in young children
  • To work as part of a team planning and evaluating nursery sessions
  • To make observations of children and use them to inform the future planning of activities that promote children’s learning and development in the outdoor environment
  • To ensure the safety and care of the children and the play environment, completing Risk Assessments and Health and Safety Records and reporting any issues in line with the Centre’s procedures
  • To assist in completing all records in line with Ofsted requirements, EYFS, Every Child a Talker and the nursery’s procedures
  • To work in partnership with parents/carers around the needs of their children and families, signposting and referring them to other agencies where appropriate
  • To ensure your practice within the Centre is inclusive and takes into account the needs of individual children
  • To inform the designated Child Protection Lead Officer of any concerns regarding the Safeguarding of children, to share information appropriately and confidentially, following the Centre’s safeguarding procedures
  • To maintain the confidentiality, in and out of the workplace, of any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is learnt as part of the job
  • To encourage parental involvement and feedback when planning and evaluating activities for their children
  • To undertake continuous professional development as agreed with your line manager
  • To undertake any other duties that fall reasonably within the role of the post which may be allocated after consultation with the post-holder e.g. take part in special events, meetings, outings and home visits
  • To demonstrate good understanding of the common core skills and knowledge for those working with children, young people and their families and the role of the Common Assessment Framework in supporting children and families who have additional needs

Course contents
  • Use questions, observations, discussions, surveys and active listening to identify the programme needs and expectations of customers, participants and stakeholders.
  • Plan a purposeful sequence of outdoor learning activities and experiences matched to an agreed Theory of Change.
  • Comply with relevant legislation and codes of practice related to the safe delivery of learning experiences in the outdoor and indoor environments in which they work.
  • Make programme design and delivery decisions based on the pedagogy/andragogy of the chosen approaches to outdoor learning used by their organisation.
  • Produce risk-benefit assessments for outdoor learning programmes.
  • Supervise, motivate and work alongside the delivery team allocated to an outdoor learning programme, taking into account available resources, participant needs, individual and organisational approach, programme budget, intended outcomes and desired long-term impact.
  • Lead differentiated outdoor learning activities and experiences to meet the needs and capabilities of individual participants within the group using appropriate resources and techniques.
  • Instruct others in how to participate in activities correctly and safely and vary the content, tempo and direction of the activities to enable all participants to contribute to and benefit from the experience.
  • Make decisions informed by data such as by observations, experience, reflection in-action (in the moment), reflection on-action-in-context (during the experience), reflection on-action (post experience) and professional judgement.
  • Deal with a dynamic change in group, equipment, or environmental conditions using an appropriate problem solving, recovery, rescue or emergency response.
  • Create the conditions for participant engagement and achievement whilst supporting equality and diversity and inclusion.
  • Use a relevant approach such as instruction, teaching, coaching and mentoring approaches to assist participants to meet the intended outcomes of a session and programme.
  • Use relevant approaches to outdoor learning; theories of human and social development; psychological models; and neuroscience to support participants to achieve the intended outcomes of a programme.
  • Use the rules of assessment evidence to determine participant progress towards intended outcomes and provide appropriate feedback in terms of its timing, frequency, content and delivery that promotes further learning.
  • Use digital technologies to support the delivery of outdoor learning sessions and enable participants to engage with technology to achieve the intended outcomes of a programme.
  • Plan and lead programmes and activities that are sustainable, minimise impact and connect participants with their environment.
  • Care for, conserve and enhance the environment in which they work.
  • Use research data and evaluation of own experience to: plan and lead evidence informed outdoor learning experiences; and communicate the value of an outdoor learning programme
  • Use data gathered on outputs, outcomes and impacts of outdoor learning programmes to quality assure programme and organisational improvements in the short, medium and longer term.
  • Engage and communicate confidently, clearly and considerately with individuals, small groups and larger groups.
  • Lead meetings, deliver presentations and write short reports .
  • Use reflective practice in their work.
  • Recognise own values, beliefs, strengths, areas of development and set future goals in line with own and the organisations objectives.
  • Your training plan

    You will study for your Level 5 Outdoor Learning Specialist apprenticeship.  You will learn from your colleagues how to carry out your duties and will also be given 6 hours per week to focus solely on your apprenticeship work. All training will be carried out at Hardmoor Early Years Centre.

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade C or 4)
    • Maths (grade C or 4)
    • L 3 Outdoor Activities Instructor Apprenticeship (grade Pass)
