Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
As an Apprentice Steel Fixer, you will learn to assemble and erect the steel components required to strengthen reinforced concrete structures, such as bridges, culverts, railway stations, power stations, etc.
- Setting out the work area, following engineering plans
- Using hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh
- Tying steel reinforcement bars (rebars) to build cages
Typically you will work within a larger team on construction projects, and, in the fullness of time, you will be able to interpret contract information, drawings and specifications, in order to assemble and install the components correctly.

Level 2 Steel Fixer Apprenticeship Standard:
- NVQ Level 2 in Steel Fixing
The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Bridgwater & Taunton College Steel fixing apprenticeship. The apprenticeship start date is the end of September 2023, this standard is delivered via block release
You will work on one of our 'live' projects and receive training from a recognised provider either one day a week or on a block release.

After this apprenticeship
Once you have achieved the Level 2 qualification you will have the opportunity to progress on to the next level. Ultimately, and depending on the individual, you could advance to a supervisory or management role within the construction industry.
