Summary

As a Business and Finance Apprentice, you will assist the Accountant and Director with a range of financial tasks. This role is ideal for someone looking to start their career in legal finance with a business committed to employee development, gaining exposure to financial operations, billing, and compliance in a law firm setting.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

Key Finance Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with accounts payable and receivable, ensuring accurate nominal, branch, and departmental coding
  • Performing client and office account reconciliations, in compliance with Solicitors Accounts Rules
  • Assisting with financial reporting, including preparing reports for senior management
  • Learning and applying legal finance regulations, including compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws
  • Monitoring cash flow and bank transactions
  • Supporting billing and credit control, to ensure timely payments from clients
  • Using and identifying new features in the financial software Xero.
  • Communicating with internal departments and external clients regarding financial matters

Key Administration Responsibilities:

  • Greet and welcome guests upon arrival at the office, directing them appropriately, copying any documentation required and making them drinks
  • Answer, screen, and forward incoming phone calls, ensuring proper redirection
  • Administrative support to the organisation
  • Ensure interview rooms are tidy and presentable, with all necessary stationery and material (e.g., pens, forms, and brochures)
  • Receive, sort, and distribute daily mail/deliveries
  • Maintain accurate client records and update information as needed
  • Other clerical duties where required such as filing, photocopying and scanning

  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths and English (grade 5 or above (C or above))
  • x 5 GCSEs (grade 5 or above (C or above))
