What you will do in your working day

To assist in the carrying out of construction and practical maintenance projects which help maintain and enhance the Broads, Rivers and waterways on a variety of sites and locations. Working under guidance from a range of Operational Technicians assisting in practical maintenance works, including but not restricted to:

  • Construction & repair of boardwalks, timber structures, fencing & outdoor furniture
  • Construction & repair of footways
  • Scrub clearance (using Clearing Saws & Chainsaws)
  • Tree management & clearance
  • Control of invasive species and vertebrate pests (trapping & humane dispatching)
  • Carry out species mitigation surveys
  • Carry out H&S task risk assessments
  • Operate Workboats and larger construction vessels
  • Use and carry out basic maintenance on small handheld power tools
  • Safe use of herbicides
  • Habitat management in wetland environments
  • Conservation grazing pony management.

Level 2 Countryside Worker Apprenticeship
As part of the apprenticeship the following additional training will be provided:
Functional Skills, if required
RYA Level 2
Brushcutter
Chainsaw certification
PA1 & PA6AW
Emergency First Aid
Driver Awareness Training (for apprentices who hold a driving licence)

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Following completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice would be able to apply for any Operations Technician vacancies that arise, as well as any other suitable roles.

Things to consider

This apprenticeship involves working outdoors in all weather conditions all year round. Shortlisted applicants will be invited by email to attend an onsite Taster Day on Wednesday 17 July 2024. Those who are successful on this day will then be invited by email to attend an interview on Tuesday 23 July 2024 at the Dockyard, Griffin Lane, Norwich NR7 0SL. The applicants appointed for the apprenticeship will start on Monday 16 September 2024. Applicants must ensure they are available to attend on these dates, as alternative dates cannot be arranged.
