What you will do in your working day
To assist in the carrying out of patrolling, construction and practical maintenance projects which help maintain and enhance the Broads National Park, Rivers and waterways on a variety of sites and locations that make up the Broads National Park Working. Under guidance from an experienced Ranger, you will assist in practical maintenance works, including but not restricted to:
- Construction and repair of boardwalks, bridges, footways, post and wire fencing, timber structures and outdoor furniture
- Scrub clearance (using Clearing Saws and Chainsaws)
- Tree management and felling operations
- Species mitigation surveys
- Carry out H&S site risk assessments and report defects
- Use and maintenance of basic hand tools and machinery
- Use and safe operation of of Broads Authority launches and vessels
- Safe use of herbicides
- Habitat management
- Grazing Pony / Cattle management
- Undertake the required paperwork needed for timesheets, health and safety procedures, and work allocation recording
- Collate, document and prepare evidence required to demonstrate learning objectives within the required Diploma syllabus
- Assist in all aspects of the Broads Authority’s conservation and navigation management programme
- Monitor and record the condition of sites, priority rights of way and permissive paths and visitor facilities and carry out minor works to improve access, biodiversity and public safety
The training you will be getting
Level 2 Countryside Worker Apprenticeship.
As part of the apprenticeship the following additional training will be provided:
- RYA Level 2
- Brushcutter
- Chainsaw certification
- PA1 & PA6AW
- Emergency First Aid
- Driver Awareness Training (for apprentices who hold a driving licence)
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
Following completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice would be able to apply for any Ranger vacancies that arise, as well as any other suitable roles.
