Summary

As an engineering apprentice at Barnfield you are mentored to learn a range of tasks such as installation of steelwork, access stairs & platforms, installation of pipework, ductile iron, steel and plastic, fabrication work. Also, workshop-based duties, mechanical installations, pumps motors gearboxes, use of lifting equipment & lifting operations.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Engineering Site Fitter Apprentice - 

Each apprentice will be placed with one of our project supervisors to learn how we at Barnfield Engineering deliver projects ranging from larger CDM projects up to £2,000,000.00 in value to small works projects around £1,000.00. The role shall be varied with time spent in the office, workshop and site environments. This will be a very hands on role assisting our team at all levels and mentored by our Project Supervisors.

Internal and external training shall be provided:

  • Installation of steelwork – Access stairs and platforms
  • Installation of pipework – Ductile iron, steel and plastic
  • Fabrication work - Workshop based duties
  • Mechanical installations – pumps motors gearboxes
  • Use of lifting equipment – Lifting operations

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

  • Working to achieve the Level 3 Engineering Fitter Standard
  • This will be witih weekly day release to Basingstoke College and workplace training and reviews
  • Maths and English Functional skills Level 2 will be delivered through classroom based weekly training for those who need to achieve them
  • On and off the job training and location to be confirmed

Mandatory qualifications:

  • Choose one of the qualifications: Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) – Awarding organization EAL; GLH 750, this qualification ensures full knowledge to complete the fitting role

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 3/D)
  • maths (grade 4 /C)
