Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • As an Accident Repair Technician, you will repair all elements of a vehicle after it has been involved in a collision. These range from small damage through to heavily impacted types of damage requiring complex and detailed repair or replacement of major structural elements of the vehicle.
  • Typically, the Accident Repair Technician works in a modern, highly technical workshop-type environment, working on a broad range of vehicles from cars and car derived vans to light commercial vehicles.
  • Uniquely, an Accident Repair Technician will work on and obtain a level of competence in all craft aspects of vehicle accident repair, including Mechanical, Electrical & Trim (MET); Panel Repair & Replacement; Preparation and Paint.
  • The Accident Repair Technician from day one embraces the need to put complete customer satisfaction, as well as commercial awareness, at the centre of everything they do. The ability to excel whilst working within a team is a key output for any Accident Repair Technician.
  • Applicants will display a good attitude, a positive approach to learning & development and a high level of ambition. Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point assessment.

Course contents
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET): Remove all damaged & associated components from a vehicle.
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET):Re-assemble replacement or existing components to a vehicle.
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET): Remove and re-assemble permanent & non-permanent fixed vehicle body panels
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET): Remove and refit all types of vehicle body panels.
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET): Remove and refit trim components.
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET): Identify and describe principle vehicle electrical components and systems.
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET): Diagnose and rectify basic vehicle electrical faults.
  • Panel Repair & Replacement: Repair all types of vehicle body panels.
  • Panel Repair & Replacement: Repair or refurbish Trim components.
  • Panel Repair & Replacement: Repair vehicles using thermal welding operations and processes.
  • Panel Repair & Replacement: Repair vehicles using non thermal joining, bonding and adhesive processes.
  • Panel Repair & Replacement: Remove, repair and replace structural body panels.
  • Panel Repair & Replacement: Identify and rectify vehicle body structural misalignment.
  • Preparation & Paint: Apply body filler & foundation materials.
  • Preparation & Paint: Prepare all types of vehicle body material.
  • Preparation & Paint: Prepare & refinish metal, plastic and pre-painted surfaces.
  • Preparation & Paint: Repair minor defects in all types of body panels and materials.
  • Preparation & Paint: Apply paint, primer and basecoat
  • Preparation & Paint: Apply topcoats and clear coats and complete final refinishing operations.
  • Preparation & Paint: Identify and rectify paint or preparation defects.
  • Cross-cutting: Carry out their work safely in the workplace and adhere to relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Cross-cutting: Develop strong working relationships.
  • Your training plan

    Training Provided:

    • Apprentices will work towards completing the Level 3 Accident Repair Technician apprenticeship programme which includes:
    • Vehicle accident repair – including Mechanical, Electrical & Trim (MET), Panel Repair & Replacement, Preparation and Paint, Hybrid / Electric Vehicle Level 2, F-Gas, Welding
    • Vella Group dedicated professional Technical Trainers who support with apprentices development
    • You may also be required to complete Functional Skills in English, maths, and IT (dependent on previous or provisional GCSE qualifications or equivalent)

     

    More training information

    • Please note that this apprenticeship includes block release college attendance at Blackpool & The Fylde College for 1 week every 6 weeks
    • Your accommodation will be provided on-site at B&FC Fleetwood Nautical Campus

    Once you have successfully completed the program you will be submitted for your End Point Assessment. The EPA is an assessment of all the knowledge, skills, and behaviours you have learned throughout your apprenticeship, it confirms you are ready and competent in the career path you have chosen. These assessments have been designed and developed by employers in the industry to reflect the daily work of the business. Please note that as part of your application, you are required to provide a copy of your CV and complete the college based online initial assessments in English and Maths.
