Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and
work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- To support high quality teaching, learning and assessment in the workshop and a positive experience for the learner
- To assist and support the departmental technicians (Brickwork, Carpentry, Plumbing) with all relevant tasks
- Maintaining acceptable standards of achievement, behaviour, discipline and punctuality
- To prepare the workshop environment for practical delivery lessons
- To demonstrate the relevant competencies for the apprenticeship and build a suitable portfolio of evidence
- To reclaim materials where possible and restock or prepare for scrap disposal as necessary
- To monitor stock levels of materials and tools etc. and report to the relevant departmental technician
- To periodically check tools and repair and/or report as necessary
- To carry out basic maintenance and development of work areas.
- To check and unload incoming materials, prepare and place in store, deal with documentation as appropriate. Occasional collection of goods may be required for which a college vehicle will be provided
- To maintain a clear, clean and safe environment in line with College health & safety processes
- To support lecturers with the required practical elements of delivery

Plan tasks within plumbing and domestic heating systems industry.
Identify and document hazards for the plumbing and domestic heating systems work. Apply control measures.
Carry out commission and handover procedures and techniques on plumbing and domestic heating systems (cold water, hot water, central heating, sanitary appliances, and rainwater).
Install, test, and commission, electrical and electrical control systems applicable to plumbing and domestic heating systems.
Perform routine service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification procedures and techniques on the non-electrical components of plumbing and domestic heating systems.
Perform routine service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification procedures and techniques on electrical and electrical control systems applicable to plumbing and domestic heating systems including industry safe isolation procedures.

Your training plan
You will study at Boston College for one day a week as an apprentice.
You will learn on the job in the work environment, and in the classroom with realistic situations and appliances.
