Summary

Hillcrest Academy seek to appoint an enthusiastic and engaging Apprentice Teaching Assistant, to work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroom with the teacher, to support access to learning for pupils and provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To support students during their learning.
  • To have good relationships with students, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding to individual needs.
  • To promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students.
  • To encourage students to engage in activities led by the teacher.
  • To encourage students to be independent.
  • To assist in preparing the classroom.
  • To be aware of student problems/progress/achievements and encourage positive learning.
  • To carry out some administrative duties.
  • To be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • To participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
  • To assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtimes.
  • To accompany teaching staff and students on visits, trips and out of school activities as required.
  • To undertake any other duties requested.

Course contents
  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
  • Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
  • Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
  • Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
  • Apply strategies that support children’s ability to manage change, transition, and significant events.
  • Analyse observation evidence to assess and plan holistic individual learning based on a comprehensive understanding of the child’s needs and interests.
  • Facilitate and support child-centred opportunities and experiences based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Provide adult led opportunities and experience based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Use reflection to develop themselves both professionally and personally.
  • Your training plan

    The apprentice will be working towards the Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship Standard qualification (Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours). Off-the-job training will be given as a minimum of 7 hours per week to complete all the necessary training, this will be delivered in the workplace.

    • Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid or Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid
    • You will be supported with and prepared for the end point assessment by EPA Plus which will comprise of:
    • Observation in the workplace by EPA external assessor
    • Portfolio-based professional discussion with an EPA external assessor.

    What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
    You will be able to apply for a position within the Academy, subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship programme.

    More training information

    Training will be delivered by Aire Vocational Training, a work-based training provider specialising in Early Years and Education. You will be assigned a personal tutor/assessor who will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours required through planned monthly teaching sessions and observations both in school and via zoom.
