Mechanical and Process engineering apprentice

Summary

During your apprenticeship (when not at college) you will work with all our departments and engineering disciplines, developing your skills and knowledge of polymer processing, from the fundamentals through to advanced level Injection moulding, as well as working within our maintenance and quality departments and our own tool room.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Duties:

Before commencing tool change get the product travel pack for the new job and ensure all equipment for the job is ready and available, including tool, required ancillaries and material. Advise your shift leader if you have any problems.
If the machine you are about to change is not clear and empty, ensure that the required quantity for the previous job has been reached and the last off checked and submitted.
Ensure that the machine has been cleared of all components from the previous job.
Remove the tool following safe working practices also ensuring that the tool has been cleaned, sprayed with mould protective and that the water ways have been blown through.
Put the tool back on the rack, or if due for a service/repair ensure the tool is correctly labelled up for the tool room.
Before commencing putting the next tool in ensure that the old travel pack is complete and that all the paperwork has been correctly filled in and that samples and gauges have been returned to final inspection.
Put new tool in and set up as per standard working practices using the master setting card where available.
Ensure that the machine is clear, safe and tidy before commencing production.
Before submitting your first off ensure that all the quality checks and measurements that you can check are to specification, and that all the paperwork is correctly completed including the first off paperwork and the machine safety checks have been carried out, and the start-up rejects have been recorded and disposed of correctly.
Once your machine is signed off ensure that your shift leader is informed.
Keep a check over the first couple of hours that the job has settled down well.

Approximately 12 on-site assessment visits per year
Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)
Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work

The college training will be held at the Abingdon campus of Oxford and Witney College – 2 days per week in year 1 and 1 day a week thereafter. Apprenticeship Assessment and Information Session: Any new person applying for apprenticeship roles where Abingdon and Witney College deliver the training will be required to attend an Apprenticeship Assessment and Information Session at Witney or Abingdon campus. This will consist of a series of initial assessments (required prior to any apprenticeship offer), completion of essential paperwork, the opportunity to find out more about the apprenticeship process, the training included, and a forum for your questions. As a new Apprenticeship applicant you will only have to undergo this process once. The Wage for apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.

After this apprenticeship

After completion of apprenticeship (2 years to Level 2 and additional18-24 months to Level 3) you as a minimum will be able to work as a fully trained process technician, but dependent on your strengths and interests you will also be offered the opportunity to grow within WHP in other engineering and associated roles.
