What you will do in your working day

Air Bearings Limited (ABL) are a world leading innovative manufacturer of air bearing solutions, used across the engineering spectrum. We design and manufacture high precision air bearing spindles that can run up to speeds of 400,000 rpm, with over 90% of our complete production process, from concept design through to the finished product, is completed in-house at our factory in Ferndown, Dorset. Visit our website for further information on ABL : https://airbearings.co.uk/ You will learn all aspect of technical product design and development within a Research and Development Function and be mentored by an experienced team, whilst working directly for ABL on a permanent basis and attend college one day per week to study for the duration of the course.

What will the role involve?

  • Generate all required product documentation including, but not limited to production drawings, product specifications and testing requirements
  • Work closely with manufacturing, Assembly and Test teams to investigate design matters
  • Assist in creating and developing product designs using CAD software. • Collaborate with experienced engineers to contribute to design concepts and solutions
  • Conduct research on materials, techniques and industry trends to inform design decisions
  • Support the design team in prototyping and testing of new products
  • You will investigate customer/supplier issues, establishing ‘root cause’ of identified problems
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision, manage time effectively and prioritise own workload
  • Carry out any other reasonable tasks as directed by the business from time to time
  • You will support the delivery of precision engineering products in line with customer specifications and to pre-determined deadlines
  • Ensuring all work carried out complies with health and safety requirements as laid down by the company and by external bodies
  • Must have access to own transport to get to work and college

The training you will be getting

• Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) (Mechanical Design) • Level 5 Foundation Degree (FdEng) (Mechanical Design) • Degree (BEng) in Engineering • Product Design and Development Degree Standard Level 6 (https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/product-design-and-development-engineer-degree-v1-0) • Functional Skills in Maths and English up to Level 2 as required
