Initially apprentices will work Monday to Friday 37.5 hours per week when they join site. Once they are competent and have been allocated to a team they will move to shift working which is 7 days on, 7 days off, 12 hour shifts.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Our 3 Year Apprenticeship Programme will see you develop both technically and personally, with the majority of your first year spent at HETA training centre in Hull completing some of the following training:

  • Foundational knowledge units including Engineering Mechanical & Electrical Science and Net Zero Sustainability 
  • Specialist Instrumentation training including:
    • Electrical Wiring & Maintenance
    • CAD
    • Programmable Logic Control
  • 1 Day a week will be dedicated to the delivery of a BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Engineering

Accommodation will be provided for Year 1 whilst at college, this will be in facilitated living alongside your peers.

Once you’re equipped with your foundation knowledge, you’ll join us on-site for Year 2 and 3 where you’ll work alongside our teams and start gaining valuable hands-on experience and training to further your understanding and start applying what you’ve learnt. You’ll be assigned a mentor, who will oversee your development and training, offering valuable insights into career paths at Perenco.

Some of your activities on-site might look like the below:

  • Working within a multi-skilled Maintenance team to safely operate and maintain the Bacton Terminal within the operational and maintenance procedures
  • Maximising the plant availability in the processing of gas received from our offshore fields
  • Plan and carry out preventative maintenance tasks to required standards and procedures, minimising impact on production
  • Perform breakdown repairs in a timely manner
  • Complete all weekly maintenance routines as defined in Maximo (Maintenance Management System) and ensure that maintenance routines are completed with the appropriate amount of detail
  • Ensure jobs are raised in Maximo to address all known defects. Order all required materials and where appropriate feed the job into the plan
  • Act as a Performing Authority and Isolating Authority as required
  • To assist with projects, working with vendors and sub-contractors as required
  • Ensure a clear and concise discipline handover is provided on each crew change
  • Management of spares and test gases to enable testing/calibration of gas monitors
  • Ensuring that Health, Safety and Environmental requirements are always adhered to and actively promoted

Course contents

Your training plan

Our Apprentices will undertake a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician, Level 3 (A level). This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at HETA in Hull. 

You will also begin a technical certificate (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend HETA one day a week over two academic years. After your initial training at HETA, you will be working towards your End Point Assessment.

At Perenco, we want to empower our people to the best of their abilities, so we also sponsor our apprentices to begin a Level 4 HNC specific to their trade in Year 3 following completion of the BTEC to satisfactory level.

Other requirements

Our Apprentices will be based at Bacton Gas Terminal following completion of college in Year 1, Perenco will provide accommodation for the first year at college in Hull. Apprentices will require a driving licence.
