What you will do in your working day

  • Carry out minor repairs to premises as necessary upon request such as replacing tap washers, replacing missing screws in hinges and catches and temporary repairs where necessary 

  • Carry out minor day to day repairs and renovation of loose and fixed furniture, (e.g. kitchen equipment, furniture in classrooms, doors etc - as and when is necessary) 

  • Renew light bulbs, fluorescent lamps and cleaning filters and diffusers  

  • Undertake minor internal decoration of the buildings (e.g. repainting small areas which have been repaired, damp patches etc) 

  • As part of the site team empty recycle bins and all outside bins on a regular basis 

  • Report any defects of building, furniture, fittings and equipment to the Site Manager 

  • Make safe any hazards and if necessary cordoning off areas of risk while work takes place 
  • Carry out cleaning duties when required 
  • Carry out grounds’ maintenance including grass cutting, watering and weeding. 
  • Support with maintenance tasks such as clearing gutters, cleaning windows and washing carpets. 
  • Be a positive working role model for children. 
  • Support the regular fire alarm testing and logging of these tests 
  • Support liaison with third party contractors regarding alarm servicing 
  • Support checking operation of boiler/heating plant and arranging call out of service providers if necessary  
  • Carry out meter readings, clock checks and energy conservation measures under the direction of the site manager 
  • Remove litter, grit, leaves/foliage from hard surfaces, (e.g. playgrounds, car parks, school fields, Forest school areas) 
  • Ensure that main entrances and paths are clear of snow/ice by applying grit and salt 
  • General porterage duties and moving of furniture to ensure smooth running of school 
  • Open the premises for use as and when required and secure the site when needed as a relief keyholder. 
  • Ensure site safety under direction of the Site Manager.  
  • Attending relevant courses to develop own knowledge, skills and understanding 
  • To follow the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures 
  • Any other work requested by, and deemed appropriate by, the Headteacher and Governors

The training you will be getting

  • You will work towards the Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship qualification
  • Functional skills in maths and English (if required)
  • This is a day release Apprenticeship which  takes place at - Horizon 38, Taurus Rd, Filton BS34 6FE

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Full time employment
  • Can progress onto a single trade Apprenticeship route upon completion of the Property Maintenance Apprenticeship
  • Progression into the trades and sub-contracting work if so desired
