What you will do in your working day

The successful candidate will assist in the maintenance of the gardens and grounds and conduct a range of garden and landscape tasks.  You will need to be comfortable working alongside a team and be willing to take direction on tasks.  As this is a family estate the candidate must understand the need for privacy and confidentiality.  The candidate should demonstrate a natural personality that is polite but friendly.

  • Maintenance of borders and lawns
  • Weeding and deadheading
  • hedge cutting and strimming
  • Assisting with greenhouse management and maintenance
  • Assisting in the Kitchen Garden; planting, caring and harvesting produce
  • Mowing lawn care with a variety of equipment 
  • Using tractors and mounted equipment after relevent training

The training you will be getting

  • You will be working towards a Level 2 Horticulture & Landscape Operative Qualification
  • The apprenticeship will last aprroximately 24 months, where 1 day a week you will study at Hadlow College from 9am to 4pm
  • For the horticulture or landscape construction operative, the qualification required is:

    (Core) Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (Ofqual registered) minimum 1-day course

    (Horticulture Operative) Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Pesticides OR City and Guilds Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides

    (Horticulture Operative) Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticide Using Hand Held Equipment OR City and Guilds Level 2 Award In The Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment

    (Landscaping construction) City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Abrasive Wheel Machines or Lantra Abrasive Wheel Machines Course

Horticulture or landscape construction operative / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Once qualified, you have the choice to become a full time gardenener and a full-time job is available at the end of the apprenticeship
