What you will do in your working day

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:
Through work experience, studying, coaching, training, and development (both practical and vocational), complete a course of study and obtain work related professional qualifications ensuring they can carry out the role of Mechanical Engineer safely, competently, and effectively.
As capability and experience is gained the apprentice will be given specific projects to complete these will initially be to assist professional engineers, but will eventually lead to the apprentice carrying out projects on their own, for example these could involve the use of problem solving tools to help resolve production related issues such as quality, engineering, logistics, tooling etc.
It is a requirement of the scheme that the Apprentice scheme achieves an appropriate advance apprenticeship Level 4 in Engineering Manufacturing Technician.

Depending on the needs of the business there, may also be the opportunity to complete an HND, Degree or equivalent qualification.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working under supervision to assist qualified Engineers in the following duties:
• Apply the full range of acquired engineering skills and knowledge to assist in the day to day running of the production facility. This could be using problem solving techniques, could also support the programs in reviewing project plans.
• Develop and support the use of such engineering tools as PFMEA, Control Plans, Flow Diagrams, and writing Standard Operating Procedures.
• Help to develop the continuous improvement of the safety culture within the organisation such as the creation of safety risk assessments.
• Undertake projects to support the engineering department to acquire and install new capital equipment using Machine acceptance criteria. (MAC)
• Learn to communicate with both the product development and tooling department to ensure issues with drawings are clearly understood and improved.
• Help to create project timing plans to support the installation of new programs on the shop floor.
• Learn how to build a financial justification to allow capital projects to be acquired.
• Learn and undertake associated skills to complement business requirements.
• Carry out any other appropriate task as instructed by a supervisor or manager.
• Comply with health and safety requirements, safety legislation and understand the effects of the legislation with regards to the work environment and particular vocation.
• Accurately and promptly maintain all documentation as required by Company procedures.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• To comply with all Health, Safety & Environmental policies, and procedures
• To understand and comply with all other Company policies and procedures.
• To undertake a full range of mechanical engineering duties and tasks competently and efficiently with such training and support as is appropriate.
• To attend college and complete course work on time and to a high standard
• To produce, maintain and be responsible for content, accuracy and sign off logbooks.
• To progressively take on additional responsibility over the term of the apprenticeship commensurate with the expected level of skills acquisition and personal development.
• To understand and complete all work-related documentation accurately and on time.
• To carry out work in a safe and diligent manner
• To attend and fully participate regular training and development reviews with Training & Human Resources Management, Mentor and Training provider representatives.
• To undertake additional duties in line with capabilities as required.

The training you will be getting

Engineering manufacturing technician level 4 (Higher national certificate) apprenticeship standard, including functional skills if required.

You will work with expert assessors to develop new knowledge, skills and behaviours within the profession.

You will experience a blended learning model as this is a day release delivery model which means that during term time, you are expected to attend weekly (one day per week), during term time to further enhance your knowledge, skills and behaviours. 

You will gather learning evidence, journals and off-the-job records using your e-portfolio.

At the end of the planned learning period, it will be agreed that you are ready to enter 'Gateway' and for your End Point Assessment to be arranged.
