The role of Design Technician is to assist the design team in the effective and professional delivery of highway design projects and consultancy services. The work will mostly be related to highway projects and will include drafting, surveying and site inspections

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
- Provides assistance at an appropriate level in the preparation of technical drawings, notes and reports for new or improvements to existing highway schemes, including Section 278, Section 38 works.
- Assistance in obtaining, collating and reviewing existing utility location information.
- Assistance in the preparation of supporting information, tables, plans and figures to be used in the submission of Planning Applications with respect to predominantly highway related projects.
- Assistance in the preparation of supporting plans and figures to be used to discharge conditions or planning obligations, including writing information, layout plans and reports.
- Assistance at an appropriate level in horizontal/vertical design to the latest design standards through the use of the relevant design manuals and local authority standards.
- Undertake at an appropriate level in the use of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, AutoTrack, KeySIGN, design work and drainage software WinDes/Flow design software programs to assist.
- Assistance at an appropriate level in the preparation of construction drawings for issue to the relevant authorities for design approvals.
- Liaison at an appropriate level with Clients, Highway Authorities, Utility companies and other relevant bodies in order to carry out the detailed design and obtain design approval.
- Assistance at an appropriate level in the preparation of contract documents including the preparation of bills of quantities and specifications.
- Assisting senior staff where necessary in writing notes of meetings and attending meetings with clients, Local Authorities other consultants from various disciplines.
- Assistance in and undertaking site visits for basic highway measurements, radar speed surveys, recording by photographic material of highway/transport/site features and obtaining appropriate and necessary highway/transportation data as required on projects.
- Developing an understanding and being aware of, and complying with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
(All of the above tasks in accordance with National and/or Local Government guidance and to the practices operated by the Company).
Any other technical duties as requested by your Team Leader/Engineering staff in line with work undertaken by Sanderson Associates

- Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
- Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
- Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
- Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
- Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
- Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
- Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
- Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
- Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
- Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
- Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
- Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Your training plan
- The course is delivered remotely via Teams, face to face and some of the examinations would take place at our training centre in Barnsley.
- The vast majority of the course is delivered in the workplace or remotely.
