Summary

Tronox are looking for a Laboratory Apprentice to be based at their Stallingborough site in the QC department. During the apprenticeship, the successful applicant will receive practical and theoretical training in laboratory techniques which will fully equip them for a future career in the Chemical Industry.

Annual Wage of £14,329.90-£23,174.58 based on NMW - Wages will reflect the April 1st 2025 National Minimum Wage increase dependant on age upon starting (£7.55p/h for 16-17, £10.00p/h for 18-20 & £12.21p/h for 21+)

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Your duties may include but are not limited to:

Preparing for laboratory-based scientific investigations & experiments. Identifying appropriate scientific techniques, procedures, and methods to meet objectives (including environmental and risk management systems).
Plan and perform laboratory-based scientific investigations and experiments using specialised techniques, following specified methodologies, and quality standards, and in accordance with relevant H&S procedures and wider regulation/ legislation.
Use specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment. Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment where required.
Systematically collect and produce reliable and accurate information from scientific investigations and experiments and keep accurate records.
Use data analysis tools to process or produce reliable analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of data.
Collaborate with stakeholders and communicate scientific information.
Apply scientific techniques for data presentation to scientific and non-scientific audiences. e.g. statistics.
Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and achieve solutions.
Maintain knowledge of advances in scientific and sector working practices and participate in continuous business performance improvement.
Support, organise and manage personal workload and contributes to the development of staff in own area.

Course contents

Identify potential scientific techniques to meet defined objectives.
Review and select appropriate scientific techniques to undertake required tasks (consider risk management, safe working practices, equipment availability, quality standards, the environment, and sustainability).
Source and calibrate specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment.
Plan and perform laboratory-based investigations and scientific experimentation using scientific techniques, procedures, and methods relevant to the role.
Systematically obtain information when conducting scientific experiments.
Record and store data in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Contribute to the development or improvement of processes and methodologies and support their implementation into the business as part of a wider team.
Use data analysis tools and software packages to process or produce reliable, accurate data or information.
Interpret scientific data to inform actions or recommendations and escalate where required.
Present the results of scientific work to scientific and non-scientific audiences in written and oral form.
Plan and prioritise own tasks and complete work to schedule whilst maintaining compliance with internal and external requirements.
Contribute to recommendations, improvements, or scientific solutions to meet the requirements of internal or external customers.
Identify, develop or contribute to solutions to technical problems.
Collaborate with stakeholders and identify results requiring further investigation or escalation.
Keeps up to date with advances in scientific and sector working practices and technologies. Shares best practice across the team.

Your training plan

At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships, so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 36 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example, shadowing, mentoring, and time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 5 Technician Scientist apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Tronox who, together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
