Summary
Childwickbury Stud are looking to recruit an Equine Apprentice to help in the running of their busy stud. Working here will provide you with a wide set of skills enabling you to provide a high standard of care to mares, foals and youngstock. You will also help with foaling and work with professionals such as bloodstock agents, farriers, and vets.

Monday to Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm, with alternate weekends. During the week there is a 1 hour lunch break and a 30 minute breakfast break (subject to availability on the day). Some overnight duties may be required during the foaling season.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Every day is different on the stud, however, main duties include:
- Feeding horses in paddocks
- Stable duties
- Exercising foals and yearlings during sales preparation times
- Assisting with vets and farriers
- During the foaling season (January – June) the successful applicant will be able to help with foaling duties overnight
- There may also be some opportunities to assist with the transport of horses

Your training plan
Training will be provided both in the workplace and through day-release at Myerscough College where you will work towards a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard.
The end point assessment will contain 3 components:
1. Knowledge Test (50 multiple choice questions lasting 75 mins). Minimum 70% pass mark to progress to other elements of End Point Assessment.
2. Practical Observation (Approx. 5 hours). Assessor will observe apprentice carrying out day to day role in workplace, asking questions where necessary.
3. Professional Discussion (lasting 60 - 75 min) Based around portfolio
There will be 2 levels of achievement: Pass & Distinction.

GCSE in:
- 2 other subjects (grade 2-9/E-A*)
- English (grade 2-9/E-A*)
- Maths (grade 2-9/E-A*)

Other requirements
This role will require applicants to work outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions. Working on a stud is often a physically challenging job so applicants must have a certain level of fitness. Applicants will get out what they put in from Childwickbury, stud work can be incredibly rewarding and highly motivated candidates will go on to excel in this industry. Childwickbury is in a semi-rural location. The Stud is within walking distance of a bus stop to get to Harpenden and St. Albans, from these locations you can get to central London via train in 20 minutes.
About this company
Childwickbury Stud, originally built in 1888 by Sir John Blundell Maple is a historic, classic-producing thoroughbred stud based in Hertfordshire. The Stud is now owned by Mr and Mrs Flatt and managed by Christian Williams. Childwickbury provide a variety of services such as boarding of mares and youngstock, foaling, sales preparation, spelling and rest and rehabilitation of horses in training.
After this apprenticeship
After completing an apprenticeship with Childwickbury Stud, the applicant should have the skills, experience and industry connections to go on to a full-time stud role. This may be a more hands-on role such as a stud hand or potentially an office-based role such as stud secretary with further training. Further training and experience could lead to progression through the industry to management roles.
