Summary

An Optical Assistant Apprentice (Level 2) is required. You will receive thorough and continued training and development to enhance your understanding of optical products. This is a role downstairs in store on the shop floor. You will be repairing/fitting glasses, helping customers in choosing both specs and lens options to suit their needs.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Identify, explain, recommend suitable frame and lens materials based on the customers’ needs and requirements
  • Confidently and correctly use and explain appropriately to a customer the wide range of tools and equipment within the optical practice
  • Take measurements, adjust or repair spectacles e.g. facial measuring tools, frame measurement tools and frame adjustment tools screening equipment
  • Accurately keep records
  • Build rapport and trust with the customer and identify their communication preferences
  • Interpret verbal and written prescription specifications and the effects this has on the eye
  • Explain to the customer the translation of written prescription to finished product
  • Use product knowledge and be able to explain how this affects vision and to be able to make recommendations for dispensing of glasses to suit needs and preferences
  • Identify suitable fitting frames based on facial and prescription requirements pupil distances, vertical heights, pantoscopic angles, frontal bow length to bend, eye size and bridge width
  • Accurately check vision and take into account how the final fit of the frames can affect someone’s vision
  • Fit the final product to ensure ongoing comfort and correct vision

  • Use a range of questioning skills, including listening and responding in a way that builds rapport, determines customer needs and expectations and achieves positive engagement and delivery.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, along with summarising language during face-to-face communications; and/or
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate communication skills, along with reinforcement techniques (to confirm understanding) during non-facing customer interactions.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use an appropriate ‘tone of voice’ in all communications, including written and digital, that reflect the organisation’s brand.
  • Provide clear explanations and offer options in order to help customers make choices that are mutually beneficial to both the customer and your organisation.
  • Be able to organise yourself, prioritise your own workload/activity and work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate patience and calmness.
  • Show you understand the customer’s point of view.
  • Use appropriate sign-posting or resolution to meet your customers needs and manage expectations.
  • Maintain informative communication during service recovery.

Your training plan

  • You will go through the 12-month long Customer Service Practitioner (Level 2) Standard, as well as your 3-month EPA gateway.
  • Visits will be one day monthly and will take place at your workplace.

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Mathematics (grade 4)
