Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

An accounting apprenticeship is an excellent pathway for those looking to build a successful career in finance. It offers a unique blend of hands-on experience, formal education, and practical skills development, all while earning a wage. One of the key advantages is the ability to learn on the job, applying accounting principles to real-world situations under the guidance of experienced professionals. This immersive learning approach helps apprentices gain a deeper understanding of financial systems, processes, and regulations, providing a solid foundation for future career advancement.

Unlike traditional academic routes, an apprenticeship allows you to "earn while you learn." This means you can avoid student debt while simultaneously gaining qualifications and work experience. Employers often value the practical skills developed through apprenticeships, as they demonstrate not only theoretical knowledge but also the ability to manage real financial responsibilities.

Moreover, apprenticeships offer networking opportunities, exposing you to a range of professionals in the industry. This can lead to mentorship, career guidance, and even potential job offers after the apprenticeship. Additionally, you’ll develop key skills such as attention to detail, problem-solving, and proficiency in accounting software - highly valuable in today’s job market.

In the long term, completing an accounting apprenticeship can open doors to higher-level qualifications, such as becoming a chartered accountant, and positions with greater responsibility. Ultimately, it’s a practical, accessible way to start a rewarding career in a growing and essential field.

Imagine yourself starting your day as an accounting apprentice in a lively, well-organised office. Your desk is neatly arranged with your computer, accounting software open, and a pile of invoices and receipts to process. You begin by checking your inbox, responding to simple client queries, or forwarding more complex issues to your mentor, the senior accountant.

As you dive into the day’s tasks, you focus on data entry—entering daily financial transactions into the accounting software. Each transaction you log contributes to the company’s larger financial picture. It feels rewarding knowing that even small tasks like logging payments or recording expenses play a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records.

In between, you might assist with bank reconciliations, comparing the company's records to its bank statements. You carefully scrutinise each entry, ensuring the balances match. If there’s a discrepancy, your investigative side kicks in as you dig deeper to uncover any mistakes or missing information.

Mid-morning, you might collaborate with your finance team on preparing financial reports. Under the guidance of a senior accountant, you help organise data for monthly income statements and balance sheets. You might be entrusted with tracking outstanding accounts receivable and ensuring payments from clients are on schedule. On the flip side, you’ll also be helping with accounts payable, ensuring that suppliers are paid on time.

As a financial apprentice, you’re not just working with numbers; you’re learning the rationale behind them. You pick up new insights from your team, understanding how financial forecasts are created or how budgets are planned. You might even sit in on meetings with department heads to gain exposure to how financial data influences business decisions.

Around tax season, your tasks will expand to preparing VAT returns or assisting with corporate tax filing preparations. It’s detail-heavy work, but you know that ensuring compliance with tax laws is a fundamental part of accounting.
