Summary

As an Apprentice at BTRC you will work closely with our experienced staff to learn all aspects of caring for retired racehorses. This is a hands-on position that requires a strong work ethic, a love for horses, and a willingness to learn.

Working 5 out of 7 days - this involves every other weekend. NB when you work a weekend you get two days off in the week. Working day 8.00am - 4.30pm, with a 1hr lunch break at 12.00pm - 1.00pm.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Assist with daily feeding, grooming, and general care of the horses.
  • Help maintain clean and safe barn facilities.
  • Monitor horse health and report any concerns to the senior staff.
  • Assist with farrier and veterinary visits.
  • Support the team with administrative tasks as needed.
  • Engage in internal and external visits to support the engagement work of BTRC.
  • Support senior staff with the training and rehabilitation programs for the horses.

Your training plan

Training will be provided both in the workplace and through day-release at Myerscough College where you will work towards a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard.

The end point assessment will contain 3 components:

  • Knowledge Test (50 multiple choice questions lasting 75 mins). Minimum 70% pass mark to progress to other elements of End Point Assessment.
  • Practical Observation (Approx. 5 hours). Assessor will observe apprentice carrying out day to day role in workplace, asking questions where necessary.
  • Professional Discussion (lasting 60 - 75 min) Based around portfolio

There will be 2 levels of achievement: Pass & Distinction.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 2 other subjects (grade 2-9/E-A*)
  • English (grade 2-9/E-A*)
  • Maths (grade 2-9/E-A*)

Other requirements

BTRC is not accessible via public transport. We are over one hours walk from the nearest bus stop so you must have access to reliable and consistent transport.
