Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Provide 1:1 support to a secondary-aged student with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), assisting them in developing independence in decision-making
  • Assist the student throughout the day with academic tasks and holistic break-out activities
  • Support the teacher with general teaching assistant duties, such as writing reports and leading small group lessons

Course contents
  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    At the end of the Apprenticeship, you will achieve the following:

    • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard with additional SEN units embedded into the training
    • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (if required.)

    Additional SEN: This qualification emphasises:

    • Exploring the roles and responsibilities of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator
    • Understanding the strategies and techniques for supporting children and their families
    • Increasing knowledge, skills, and behaviours of SEN codes of practice

    The apprenticeship will be delivered via teams each month, with observations carried out in the workplace alongside your job role. There is no day release required for this training.

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English & Maths (grade C/4/ Functional Skills Level 2)
