Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with an interest in design in the built environment to start a career in Civil Engineering.

Civil engineers plan, design and manage large construction projects. This particular opportunity will be working with on a large scale redevelopment site in central Stevenage.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Under instruction/supervision, provide dimensional control for the project from primary survey stations. This includes grid-lines, datum’s and offsets where required
  • Assist senior engineer on site with setting up instrument, recording datum, levels and other key information
  • Assist the project management team in the delivery of Health, Safety & Environment presentations
  • Complete as-built surveys under direction from the project management team
  • Following instruction, understand the basics of digital information systems
  • Complete an individual daily diary and write up progress reports
  • Order concrete and work out quantities
  • Be aware of and understand the basics of method statements and risk assessments
  • Issue reports to supervising engineers
  • Assist other functions where required. i.e. completing progress marked up drawings for the planning department
  • Take immediate corrective action in relation to any safety risks they observe and inform/seek support from a supervisor or colleague who has a greater level of experience
  • Work collaboratively with Engineers and gain experience from those around them
  • Be responsible for maintaining & testing of the instruments and equipment under their care at all times

Course contents
  • Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
  • Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
  • Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
  • Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
  • Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
  • Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
  • Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
  • Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
  • Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance
  • Your training plan

    • The apprentice will work towards the Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Standard and receive regular off the job training sessions by means of regular online sessions.

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    Other requirements

    Placement will be offered only after successful pass of a Drugs & Alcohol test. Due to working hours only applicants aged 18+ can be considered for this position.
