Summary

4 Year apprenticeship programme combined with educational study and on-site work with rotation in various Engineering / Maintenance departments. Opportunities to be offered permanent positions in the end of the apprenticeship to start your career. Maintenance includes preventative and reactive maintenance tasks on mechanical systems within the business.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Arconic is a manufacturing company based in Kitts Green, Birmingham. We produce aluminium plate primarily for the aerospace industry but also operate in other markets such as defence. The plant was built in 1938 and produced high strength aluminium alloys for aircraft and ships during the second world war.

Successful candidates will be working alongside the existing team to carry out predictive, preventative and breakdown maintenance on a diverse range of machinery. This is a diverse role that will provide opportunities and experiences in a multi-functional manufacturing setting where no two days will be the same.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist in preventative, predictive and routine maintenance work
  • Identify and ensure critical spares are stocked and reordered
  • Co-ordinate with suppliers to supply spare parts for machines
  • Carry out TPM (Preventative Maintenance) schedules
  • Carry out the maintenance of plant machinery, electrically or mechanically (depending on your role)
  • Identifying and liaise with suppliers of maintenance services when required
  • Investigating maintenance problems affecting production and identify improvements
  • Maintain and record work and machine breakdown history
  • Assist and learn from experienced electrical / mechanical workers to help build skillset
  • Focus strongly on safety, knowledge of electrical / mechanical systems and building good mechanical / electrical systems
  • Work within and abide by the company policies
  • Undertake all onsite training to successfully complete the training
  • Attend college regularly to become a fully qualified Electrical / Mechanical craftsman with a Level 3 BTEC engineering
  • Undertake an NVQ qualification and learn and integrate the knowledge, skills and experiences

Together with invaluable commercial and practical experience, you’ll gain several academic and vocational qualifications throughout your time with us, which are fully paid for, including: 

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) - off the job full-time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham in year 1
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) 
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
  • In house training in line with your requirements

More training information

This apprenticeship spans 4 years:

In year 1, you will spend 36 weeks at Make UK perfecting your hands-on skills in a practical setting, with the remainder of your time being based at Arconic putting what you've learnt into practice. 

In years 2 and 3, you will attend Make UK on day release to Make UK, completing your BTEC L3 Engineering in a classroom environment, to learn the theory behind everything you've learnt in your first year. 

Throughout years 3 and 4, you will study towards your Development Competence (NVQ), at Arconic, learning on the job and making sure that you have all of the skills required to because a competent and confident maintenance engineer. 

To complete your apprenticeship, you will be expected to complete your end point assessment where you will meet with the awarding body to discuss what you've learnt over the 4 year apprenticeship.
