Summary

You will be part of a friendly team providing support to clients. As well as having a supervisor who will mentor you, you will benefit from training provided by the team. There may be an opportunity for you to move to our parent company if you wish to progress further in your career to become a qualified chartered accountant or a tax advisor.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Input and review data

• Review and maintain sales, purchase and general ledgers

• Post and review month end journals

• Advise managers of any outstanding issues

• Complete VAT returns (in your second year with us)

• Maintain a full and accurate audit trail by filing and referencing documents

• Liaise with other departments such as Payroll

• Travel to and work from client sites

• Prepare management accounts (this will be in the final year of AAT)

• Complete each assignment before passing to the manager/senior bookkeeper for review

• Ensure a high level of service to meet clients’ expectations

• Ensure that all hours worked on assignments are correctly recorded

This is a highly deadline-based role so, at times, flexibility on hours in peak times will be required.

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

    East Sussex College will provide the apprenticeship standard which will include Knowledge, Skills, Behaviour, Diploma (if included) and Functional Skills (if required).

    Desirable qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade 4/C)
    • Maths (grade 4/C)
    • Accounting (grade C)
    • Maths (grade C)
    • AAT Bookkeeping Certificate (grade Pass)
    • AAT Level 2 Accounting Certificate (grade Pass)
