Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to qualify as an Early Years Educator in a supportive and welcoming setting. We have successfully previous placed staff through this course over the past 18 months. The candidate will be predominantly in our preschool room working with an experienced team in a nurturing environment.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To provide a safe, high-quality education and care for Pre-school children
  • To fulfil legal and statutory requirements
  • To contribute to and implement Pre-school policies
  • To ensure that all statutory, legal, and setting obligations are followed
  • To ensure the child protection policies are adhered to and the welfare of the children in the setting are protected
  • To ensure that Pre-school is a safe environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively face to face with parents and other professionals
  • Commitment to teamwork
  • Awareness and commitment to the safeguarding of children and adults
  • Ability to write clear reports
  • To effectively deliver the EYFS ensuring that the individual needs and interest of children in the setting are metPlan and carry out activities in line with the EYFS
  • To keep records of your key children’s development and learning, looking for progression and continuity alongside the early Years Foundation Stage, and share with parents, carers, and other key adults in the child’s life
  • To ensure the provision of a high-quality environment to meet the needs of individual children having an awareness of any disabilities, family cultures and medical histories
  • To advise the Safeguarding designated person/manager/deputy of any concerns, e.g., over children, parents, the safety of the environment, preserving confidentiality as necessary
  • To ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are always maintained
  • Maintain accurate records for all children e.g. registers, accidents, and incidents etc.
  • Looking after the day-to-day physical needs of the children under your care to include changing nappies or toilet training
  • Engaging children in a range of fun and stimulating activities, working with them to learn through play. These activities will include reading, number skills, messy play, and physical activity

Course contents
  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
  • Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
  • Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
  • Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
  • Apply strategies that support children’s ability to manage change, transition, and significant events.
  • Analyse observation evidence to assess and plan holistic individual learning based on a comprehensive understanding of the child’s needs and interests.
  • Facilitate and support child-centred opportunities and experiences based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Provide adult led opportunities and experience based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Use reflection to develop themselves both professionally and personally.

    As an Apprentice, you will have the opportunity to study the following through this Apprenticeship:

    • Early Years Educator Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
    • Functional skills English and maths if required

    At Havant & South Downs College we offer different methods of delivery either work based or day release dependent on the course. This will be discussed with you upon appointment.
