Summary

JMP Bricklaying & Building Services Ltd are looking for an Apprentice Bricklayer (Level 2) to join their team in Saltash. Main duties will include; applying and sealing foundations with materials that are damp-resistant and spreading and removing excess mortar, inspecting vertical and horizontal brick alignment.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Jamie Preston works on new build properties in the Devon and Cornwall area. Main duties will include: applying and sealing foundations with materials that are damp-resistant. You will be spreading and removing excess mortar, inspecting vertical and horizontal brick alignment.

Along with this, you will be applying bricks, blocks and pavers in lines or following decorative patterns or designs, clearing up work space after each day and cleaning tools.

You will be working alongside other builders so will also pick up experience in other home improvement activities that are carried out.

Due to the nature of the work, a CSCS card is required to be able to get onto the building site, training on this will be given if you pass the interview stage with Skills Group.

Learning and Development:

  • Receive hands-on training from experienced bricklayers, gaining valuable guidance and support
  • Develop skills in laying bricks and blocks, understanding different techniques and patterns
  • Learn to mix and apply mortar correctly, ensuring proper adhesion and strength of the structure
  • Acquire knowledge of interpreting and following architectural plans for accurate bricklaying

Duties and Tasks:

  • Lay bricks and blocks according to design plans, maintaining accuracy and alignment
  • Prepare mortar mixes and spread them evenly to ensure solid and durable brickwork
  • Assist in constructing and repairing masonry structures, using specialised tools and equipment
  • Maintain a clean and organised work area, including cleaning tools and storing equipment properly

Course contents
  • Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Comply with industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Read and interpret information from drawings and specifications.
  • Estimate and select required resources: For example, the quantity of bricks and blocks, mortar, wall ties and insulation.
  • Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
  • Select and use hand tools.
  • Maintain and store hand tools.
  • Set out brick and block cavity wall to given tolerances, including an opening.
  • Construct a stretcher bond brick and block cavity wall with return and opening to given tolerances, including installing a lintel with soldiers, brick and edge sill, closure around opening, insulation, fire stopping, cavity tray, damp proof course (DPC) and weep holes.
  • Apply joint finishes: For example, half round, flush, weather struck and recessed.
  • Set out and construct a simple brick solid wall with capping.
  • Gauge and hand mix mortar to ratio.
  • Measure and cut bricks and blocks using hand tools, to given tolerances.
  • Carry out a simple repair: For example, replacing damaged bricks.
  • Protect materials and finished work.
  • Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidance.
  • Applies team working principles to their own and the wider build team.
  • Identifies well-being support available to self and others.
  • Construct a brick wall with raking cut. For example, gable end wall or garden wall with raking cut.
  • Your training plan

    The Apprenticeship in Bricklaying consists of:

    • Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship Standard
    • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
    • Functional Skills in maths and English, if required.

    As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

    Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory-based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

    As an additional qualification, you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

    As part of your apprenticeship, Skills Group will also support you in completing your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
